help chosing light 3 person tent
Hi guys -- I'd like some help picking a light 3 person tent (pretty much for 2 people).

I've been looking at the Marmot Aeros 3P and the BlackDiamond Vista 3P. Also heard good things about the Mutha Hubba (although its heavier).

Any suggestions/thoughts/experiences?

The BlackDiamond looks great but I read some review about bugs being attracted to it bc of the bright yellow fly (and small ones getting in through mesh).

All help is appreciated. Thanks!

The best - by far - combo of light weight and lottsa space is the MSR Twin Peaks. Allthough, it's more of a tarp than it is a tent - no floor, but the sides come down within a couple inches of the ground, so it's full coverage and weather wind, snow and rain as good as - if not better than - any tent i've ever set up. Two people fit in there with full winter gear and have plenty of room left over. And it only weighs about a pound and a half. A couple of companies are making similar sheters now... GoLite being one. If bugs are a signifcant issue (if your in the South or NE), I'm pretty sure there's an optional bug net that you can get for it.

Here it is in action:

It's roomy enough that you can cook in it as well, no floor to worry about burning.

thanks. that might be a bit much for me. im really looking for something that i can use in a variety of situations, and while having something that like would be amazing, i think id like the security of a real tent.

security from bugs I can understand. Any other sense of security is nothing more than wishful thinking. Hauling around a 3p for two of you seems a bit excessive unless you are car camping. In which case that's a whole different ball game.

Those are all good brands You won't be going wrong with any of them. The tarp is a better rig, but if you must have a tent those are all winners. I agree a 3p tent for two is overkill. Look for a 2p tent with a vestubule (so your junk can take up outside space and not inside space). A 3p tent will not be as warm as a 2p tent... But this is a fine point inb a 3 season model.

I have a six moon designs lunar duo tent and am very pleased with it. It's a two person tent, with lots of extra room.

I've had it out in some pretty bad weather and it's done great.

I recommend three 1-person tents or two 2-person tents. Otherwise, I suggest a Coated Nylon Tarp, like 12'X16'.

Numerous times I have slept under an 8'X10' one. At times I have used the tarp as a cover over a 1-person or 2-person tent.

Anyone have any experience with the Big Agnes Elk Horn? We're looking for something with room for two adults and one big dog. It's selling for a pretty good price at the REI outlet site.
