VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — The U.S. air force says it has successfully tested an unarmed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missile

The ICBM was launched at 1:01 a.m. from a base in California today.

Its three unarmed re-entry vehicles travelled about 6,800 kilometres over the Pacific Ocean to targets near the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

The missile was launched under the direction of the 576th Flight Test Squadron. The air force says squadron members installed tracking and command destruct systems on it to collect data and meet safety requirements.”

Do this to prevent Russia from physically installing a puppet government. Get Georgia into NATO ASAP. Show Ukraine et al the US is not chickensh*t like the rest of the Europeans. Sell/give them a metric buttload of anti-aircraft and anti-tank weaponry and the training to use it to maximum effect. Vigorously expand missile defense. Meanwhile, slap sanctions on Russia and all that jazz. Also, cut socialist spending and pump defense spending up over 30% of the budget. Start expanding our military back to Cold War size. Weaponize space, huge increases in tech R&D.

Of course that's not going to happen. The US needs Russia more than Russia needs the US. The US can't have Russia giving Iran real air defense systems. The US can't have Russia meddling in Afghanistan. Sanctions won't hurt Russia much at all, nor will they pass. Germany yesterday surrendered to Russia and will block - again - Georgia's entry into NATO. Europeans are only concerned about getting enough heating oil for the winter and will gladly bend over for Putin.

And Russia knows that Barack Obama will likely be the next president. With that comes further military decline and cuts in next-gen programs, no backbone to confront threats, reckless abandonment of American interests overseas, loss of progress in Iraq/A-stan, loss of face, and who knows what else. Putin knows he will be able to push Obama around, and sadly so does everyone else. Germany is just an early acknowledger.

The future seems bleak right now. Another 70's style "malaise" is upon us, as is another Carter.”

U.S. knew Georgia trouble was coming, but couldn't stop it

Pentagon officials said that despite having 130 trainers assigned to Georgia, they had no advance notice of Georgia's sudden move last Thursday to send thousands of Georgian troops into South Ossetia to capture that province's capital, Tskhinvali. Not only did the U.S. troops working alongside their Georgian counterparts not see any signs of an impending invasion, Georgian officials did not notify the U.S. military before the incursion, a senior U.S. defense official told McClatchy.

"We knew they were going to go crack heads. We told them again and again not to do this," the State Department official said. "We thought we had an understanding with the Russians that any response would be South Ossetia-focused. Clearly it's not."

And as to why we didn't see the tanks while they were still in Russia:

U.S. "national technical means," the official name for spy satellites and other technology, are "pretty well consumed by Iraq, Afghanistan and now Pakistan," the official said, and there was only limited monitoring of Russian military movements toward the Georgian border.”
