MSNBC reports that McCain named Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

I wonder why he'd choose somebody so inexperienced in foreign policy to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

It's an interesting choice. It certainly helps him with Hilary's disaffected women voters. On the other hand, it undercuts his attacks on Obama's inexperience and provides a easy way for opponents to talk about McCain's age and health.

Hopefully most Americans see it the way you do, Geobeet, when they decide who should be President, and how much foreign policy experience they should have. Come to think of it, having domestic policy experience would be a nice plus in a President too. LOL

His advanced age and history of cancer does make the VP choice all that more important.

I hear she's got her NRA card.... That's all it'll take for some people.

From what I see it's a rather brilliant pick. And what impecable timing. McCain cut off Obama at the knees - the media are talking about this and not Obama's speech - lol. Palin will appeal to women and disaffected Hillary supporters, she's conservative and will help shore up McCain's base, she's pro 2nd Amendment, and she's youthful and attractive. She has some executive experience, but she probably is no foreign policy expert. Conservatives seem energized and excited over this pick.

Contrast that with obama picking a washed up washington insider bitter white guy known for being an ass. And then a lackluster convention that didn't give him a boost in the polls. LMAO!

I know this is a difficult thing for an international geopolitics genius to understand, but it was McCain who leveled that charge at Obama first. So there's a pot calling the kettle black alright, but not the way you suggest.

I love this pick. If anyone was to actually read up on her they would see that this is a very strong, independent woman whose actions speak for her. She has done more political/government reform in her short political career than most politicians do in their entire career. She is an NRA member because she is a real hunter and not an upper crust huntsman. She worked with her husband, 1/4 Yupik Eskimo, as commercial fisherman. She voted against same sex marriages in Alaska, but vetoed a bill that would deny government benefits to same sex partners of state workers. She has exposed corruption in her own party. She has cut spending while also returning excess revenues caused by high fuel prices back to her constituents.

This woman gets things done. Obama has a pretty campaign and talks a good game, but Palin has actually already made change.

Muttonhead, McCain calling Obama inexperienced in foreign policy choosing a running mate who knows absolutely zero about foreign policy as his running mate is a pot calling the kettle black, no matter how you want to parse it.

Let's see, McCain is how old? He has how many health issues? You call me gramps? McC has at least a decade on me. Who takes over if he craps out?

If experience in foreign policy is a requisite, I would expect the expert on foreign policy who has already made that a point of criticism of his candidate to choose a running mate who has foreign policy experience.

See the point? I know you can.

Sure, it's just a lot more convoluted and weaker than mine. You see, the POTUS needs to be ready from day one. Barack clearly isn't, and McCain is entirely justified to point that out, as his VP pick has more executive experience and a track record of getting things done than Obama. To be honest, however, I'm not thrilled with that aspect of her.

Yeah, look at those boots, that rain coat. That's a woman that regularly traipses around in the woods instead of the kind that just look like they are hunters.

I also wanted to add that whatever position you take on abortion, this is a woman who backs up her position with action. While 90 percent of pregnant women who are given a Down syndrome diagnosis choose to have an abortion she chose not to kill her child.

She seems to be pretty bright. Fast learner, she'll probably know more about foreign policy than Obama and Biden put together by the time election day roles around. Besides, I'm not sure how valuable Biden's foreign policy knowledge is, since he chooses to be wrong nearly all the time. I'd say "all the time" but he's been at it for so long, surely he's been right once or twice.

I agree with Mutt, that the perceived slap at small town America was a mistake.

On the foreign policy experience, of course McCain will try to look at it as a balance between age and foreign policy experience, and youth, fresh blood, and executive experience. However, it does undercut his swipes at Obama and does highlight his age and health issues. We will see how the battle of the spin meisters goes on this.

My personal take is that with either ticket we will have an improvement over the current administration. It's also exciting that we will have broken either a racial or a gender barrier on inauguration day.

I like McCain. I think he is as about as honest and decent as anyone who could succeed in politics for as long as he has and get to where he is now. I had a cousin (who died last year, but not before writing some big checks to McCain, who knew him well and greatly admired his strength of character. That means something to me. I voted for him in the 2000 primary. On the other hand, I don't like the position shifts McCain has made and don't think he will do enough to undo damage done by W both domestically and internationally.

Ironic that there is a huge outcry about Palin from the left. Yet there is no concern with their candidates choice for VP.

Obamas campaign is about change....

- he chooses the 4th most senior senator with 36yrs in washington...silence

- his choice has a long and interesting relationship with MBNA a HUGE credit card company. He sold his house at an inflated price to an MBNA exec, took over 200K in campaign funds from MBNA while his son was an MBNA VP, His son is still and MBNA consultant and lobbyist, he sided with MBNA during recent bancrupty law changes...silence

This isnt change, its blinders.

I am not terrible excited about Palin but at least see consistency in McCains choice of her.

I'm a little surprised at that. Palin is a nutty religionist. I thought you'd appreciate that:

Palin on Creationism/ID:
Teach both. You know, don’t be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important and it’s so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And, you know, I say this, too, as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject -- creationism and evolution. It’s been a healthy foundation for me. But don’t be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides.

yep, hunts and fishes. Owns (or owned) a commercial fishing business. In every campaign she has run from town council to governor she has run on a promise to clean up corruption, cut taxes, cut waste and better the communities economy. When she was elected mayor she cut her own salary and cut property taxes by 60%. She was overwhelmingly reelected and increased the towns revenue stream.

She exposed corruption at the top of her own party. She killed the Bridge to Nowhere (a pile of pork if there ever was one). he tossed out a deal that was to friendly between the ex-governer and the oil companies to build a gas pipeline and created one that was better for the people of alaska. She killed the states gas tax for 1 year. She instilled a windfall tax against oild companies and turned the money from that back to her constituents. She is no friend to oil companies but she is a proponent of drilling for oil.

I agree with almost everything you say, pedxing. I just wish McCain was more of a Monetarist or Austrian in his economic beliefs. I’m afraid we’re going to get government growth no matter which of the two parties get elected. But Obama AND a Democrat congress will surely hasten the decline of our once great country. Oh well, it’s not like it hasn’t happened before.

Economists agree that Roosevelt’s “New Deal” policies prolonged the depression.

Johnson’s Democrat supported “Great Society” policies did nothing to end poverty as promised. Instead they created a whole new level of government bureaucracy. Public housing has been proven a failure. Welfare was a failure and had to be reformed.

US corporate taxes stand at 35% and yet Democrats call for more corporate taxes while companies keep moving jobs out of the US. Mexico corporate taxes: 34%. Chinese corporate taxes: about 17%.

For 33 of the past 37 years (since 1970) government has run a deficit. They have spent more than they have taken in.

During those years Democrats had a majority in the House of Representatives every year except for the years between 1997 to 2007. During those years Democrats had a majority in the Senate every year except for the years between 1981 to 1987, 1995 to 2001, and 2003 to 2007. Since 1970, the only years the Democrats did not control one of the legislative branches was between 1997 to 2001 and 2003-2007 when Republicans controlled both Houses.

Congress has run a deficit for 29 of the 29 years Democrats have either held or shared the majority. Congress has run a deficit for 4 of the 8 years Republicans have held the majority in both houses.

The only years congress has run a surplus since 1970 are 1998-2001 when Republicans controlled both houses of congress.

And the bottom 50% of taxpayers pay 3% (http://www.ntu.org/main/page.php?PageID=6) of the tax burden while Democrats keep calling for “the rich” to pay their “fair share.” Just like with the word liberal, leftists have obviously changed the meaning of the word fair.

CHANGE… now there’s something ambiguous we can vote for.

It's an interesting choice and a total roll of the dice for him.

It's difficult to be critical of her at this stage as we know so little about what she has to say. Initially she seems solidly conservative, more so than McCain in some respects.

It's an interesting call and reflects the problems with the other Rep candidates.

It does add some vigor and some talking points to the campaign.

I'm not sure if she's ready to be president - but I'm not sure anything quite prepares people for that. They either grow to fill the office or they are overwhelmed by it.

We'll have to see how she starts performing on the campaign trail. She may thrive, but at the moment it seems like a vbery strange decision.
