Lake Johnson Hiking
I'm new to the Raleigh/Durham, NC area and have heard some good things about the trails of Lake Johnson. I'm thinking about a trip to the lake on the weekend of the 20th for some hardcore hiking and camping. Looking to do 10-20 miles. Anyone in?

You might list the state too so that folks know where the heck you're talking about.

That Lake Johnson area is beautiful, but strenuous. I would recommend some warm clothing, especially wool socks and a winter cap and gloves, that high elevation weather can be hellacious.

Good luck man, post some pics when you return. Wish I could go with you, but I've gotta take care of my 6 kids. I don't think you want 6 angry, whiny kids ruining a beautiful star-lit evening in the piedmont!!! lol!!!

Fellas, you might be missing your window to head out to Lake Johnson. Cold months are right around the corner, so you may want to think about pushing this hike back to April or so. I've heard just to get to base camp you are looking at three months, and thats not counting acclimation (or freezing temperatures).

Gentlemen, you don't know what you're dealing with.

PLEASE ADVICE, proceed with extreme caution. The last attempt I made to the summit was in '95, and I only got to the paddle boats before I developed a bad case of HAPE. littlebaldrooster is right to tell you that your window is rapidly closing. Best of luck to you and God speed.

Oh beware! The extremes of Lake Johnson near Raleigh, NC are incredible. Especially once the weather turns cool. I don't recall ever making it to the paddle boats before we had to turn back.
