Details on Black Balsam to Cold Mtn. Trip
No real details, I just wanted to start a new thread :)

I'm diggin the idea of a shuttle hike. We can arrange the shuttle first thing Saturday morning if need be.

Anyone know if there are good camping spots up around Cold Mtn?

I don't want to speak for everyone, but I have no problem with well behaved dogs.

Are you implying that the dog that charged you during our Carver's Gap to Ervin hike was NOT well behaved?

There are several great camp site just before the summit. Spaces for tents and trees for hammocks too. Also, there is a nice water source just before you get to the camp sites. Well worth the trip to camp. Fantastic views up top but will be getting bitter cold up there soon.

Do you have any more details on this trip? If not, do you need any help with the trip planning? I have heard that this is a great area and am really looking forward to the trip.

Uh I'm sorta relinquishing control of the trip....I'm not sure that Tater is goin and if I have to drive myself....I dunno that it'll work.

I'll have to talk with Uncle Fridge and see if he was still plannin on goin.

I wanted to do something with a lot of views...but at the end of October, I started thinkin that campin up that high might be awfully cold...

What do you guys think about what the route should look like? I was originally thinkin we'd hike from Black Balsam over to Cold Mtn.

I am heading out to Mt. LeConte in a little bit, I will look at this trip when I get back and help you pick out something. You can't bail on a trip you planned!

If you have the map, what about 2 possible loops.

1. From the Boy Scout Camp:

Hike up the Art Loab Trail to FS Trail 107 (the red horse/hiking trail) with a short road walk back to the car (or a mile or so shuttle)

2. From Big East Fork Parking Area on 276:

Hike up FS Trail 332 to Shining Rock Gap to the Art Loab Trail going South to FS Trail 146 that immediatly runs into FS Trail 362 that intersects FS Trail 357 which takes you back to the parking lot.

If you want a shuttle hike we could do the Art Loeb Trail From the Boy Scout Camp to the Blue Ridge Parkway, or do the Mountains To Sea Trail Through the Wilderness.

..........SPS?.....Are you still out there?

What is the status of this trip? If SPS is out, then is anyone still interested?

(I still say we shouldn't let SPS out of her own trip even if she has to take a greyhound!)

Chattanooga.

I don't think there was ever a real itinerary so if you are interested in going, we can figure out what route we want to go.

I am about an hour west of Chattanooga. If you haven't hiked that area, I think that the trail from Black Balsam Parking area up and over Tennant Mountain and Black Balsam Knob and through Flower Gap is probably the most diverse as far as what you get to see...but I would be open to whatever really.

Hey Mocs; anybody still in for this trip? If not, I may stay this direction and do a hike in middle TN.

Hey I actually found this old thread! I'm looking to do a trip in this area sometime before I have foot surgery in October. Can those peeps who actually know this area help me find a lovely 10 or so miles to hike? Tater is a hammocker so if you know of any camping spots with both views and trees, that would be great!

Thanks for the help.
