“I am just needling when I say the racist in the democratic party will take the election away from Obama. I actually mean it opposite of what most people think. I truly believe that when it comes to the actual vote they will vote with their brain instead of their heart or not vote at all. I see it in my wife. She wants desperately to vote for Obama. She would normally vote for democrats, but she is self employed, pays a payroll, works with delusional clients regularly, dislikes many of Obama's associations (even if he does throw them all under the bus once they become an embarrassment to him) and can see Obama for someone other than the person she wants him to be. I think she won't vote for him on November 4. I think she will just leave that selection blank, not because she is a racist, but because, in the end, Obama is not the man his campaign says he is.”

McCain will be accused of racism regardless

John McCain is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. He could never mention Jeremiah Wright and ensure his campaign aides don't either, and he'd still be accused of running a racist campaign.

Have his tactics against Obama in recent days gotten more personal and hard-edged? Yes. Are his top surrogates, including his running mate, suggesting that the Democrat is a terrorist sympathizer who is not a patriot? Yes.

But is McCain doing anything overtly racist? No.

As Harold Ford Jr. told me in Nashville: "If Barack were not African-American, they’d be doing this."

Indeed they would. Just look at some of the GOP tactics questioning how much John Kerry, a white Vietnam veteran, cared about the troops.

That doesn't matter, though, to the outrage industry, ever on the lookout for any sign of racism and quick to pounce even when it's not there.

I was reminded of McCain's quandary when I got an e-mail touting the expertise of a college professor. Now, reporters get such pitches from PR shops and college publicity departments all the time. But this one stood out:

Lester Spence, an assistant professor of political science at The Johns Hopkins University, is available to discuss with reporters his belief that racial overtones are becoming part of Sen. John McCain's campaign rhetoric as Election Day approaches.

"Sen. John McCain's recent attacks on Barack Obama, accusing him of being a terrorist, combined with GOP columnists and bloggers arguing that Obama supports 'painting the white house black' and 'racial reparations' represent an embrace of the problematic 'Southern Strategy' that the GOP has historically used to increase white racial resentment," said Spence, who is African American. "But as can be seen in the most recent presidential debate, he is employing this strategy selectively, only among the GOP faithful."


McCain has not called Obama "a terrorist."

And those "GOP columnists and bloggers?" Spence is apparently referring to Peter Wallsten's LA Times story on Sunday that drew much liberal outrage. In the piece — a well-reported and fascinating look at Obama's racial challenges in Appalachia — Wallsten alluded to a Republican activist in Southwest Virginia who wrote a racially offensive column for a local paper.

From that — one isolated piece from a low-level party activist in a rural paper that only got noticed by the good reporting of a journalist who delved deep into the coalfields — Spence infers "an embrace of the problematic 'Southern Strategy' that the GOP has historically used to increase white racial resentment?"

This publication and others have been vigilant for any signs of Republicans using Obama's race against him. But let's be candid — McCain has done no such thing, nor is there any evidence that he's instructed GOP allies to go there.

He's now in a no-win position. His supporters want him to use Wright against Obama, seeing it as the closest thing they have to a silver bullet in a difficult race. But, as messages like the above prove, he is already being accused of racism without ever mentioning the controversial pastor. One can only imagine the accusations that would rain down upon McCain should he extend his indictment of Obama's judgment to the Democrat's decision to sit in Wright's pews.

Never mind, incidentally, that Obama himself has called Wright fair game and that Hillary Clinton questioned Obama's decision to attend Trinity during the Democratic primary.”

I had this very debate with Bacpac four years ago. He tried to chastise me for voting against Bush, rather than FOR Kerry. In all my responses to him I compared Kerry to the alternative. He insisted that I was voting for a flawed candidate because of my "hatred" for Bush.

I haven't heard any of my conservative friends say McCain would make a good president. The difference is the libs turned their hatred of Bush into "logic" that Kerry would make good decisions. All I hear the Republicans and conservatives say is that McCain will suck half as much as Obama. The point being YOU (plural) compromised your principals and lied to yourselves about Kerry simply because you hated Bush. I haven't heard any conservatives do that.

Many conservatives won't be voting for McCain, not because he's not enough like Obama, but becayse he is too much like Obama. That will be enough to possibly cause an Obama win.

“I think its great that Kerry is leading in endorsements by a ratio of 3:1 based upon circulation and so many papers that endorsed Bush in 2000 now endorse Kerry or just can't endorse Bush.

I think that's an indication of the election is going to pan out. Bush got all the votes he'll ever get in 2000 - no Gore voters will go for him. Kerry will get many votes from disillusioned former Bush supporters and a flood of new voters disgusted by the past nearly 4 years resulting in a Kerry landslide Nov. 2nd.
