I'm picking up a new puppy tomorrow--a beautiful 8wk old Redbone Coonhound. I've had plenty of dogs in my life, but am unfamiliar with this breed. I hope to take her on most of my hikes. Anyone familiar with the breed?

I had a pregnant redbone show up one time and dropped 8 puppies the next day.

VERY high energy and get into anything and everything. They follow their nose which means they can get themselves into situations. I had a large garden and they thought green tomatoes were toys. If you have something that can be chewed on you best start thinking about how to protect things.

They love attention and the momma was mellow and all of them I have encountered over the years are laid back...except when they are on a scent.

Train her up good or she's gonna be a handfull on the trail. Scent dogs will choose the scent over the command everytime unless they are trained properly.

ditto what sticks and rev said...they're breed to follow a scent...be sure to tie her up or put her in the tent with you at night

What Rev, Thrifty and Hiker said.

We used to run black and tans and walkers on racoon and and fox in eastern Ontarion back in the late sixties.

We'd spend most of Saturday cruising the roads and asking at farm houses for our hounds.

Yeah you might consider getting a training collar. After a couple of zaps after a warning tone most dogs only need the tone to bring them back in line.

Some people think it is cruel...but what is more cruel...your dog under control and with you or running off getting lost and possibly hurt.

i can't remember what they're called but you might also want to look into getting the 5th claw removed...that's the one that would be like our thumb...my beagle mix would constantly run off into the brush, completely out of control, and broke that nail several times...it's very painful

Thanks all! So far she's very smart, affectionate, sweet natured--but WAY more of a crybaby than I was expecting. I've always favored independent retriever types and border collies. We shall see--she's more my son's dog, but I work night shift and am expecting to be a bit sleep deprived for a while.

Sounds like me and the new kitten, Sunnydayz. He's going through his I'm clingy but fierce with tiny claws and pointy teeth phase. He's darned lucky he's so cute.

Well if you were only a few weeks old and suddenly sleeping by yourself...cold and alone you might wimper a bit too.

Try a heating pad set on a low setting covered with a blanket for a few days. When I got my beloved Sam @ 6 weeks I let him sleep with me for the first few nights until he got use to being alone.
