Most of you know, this is my favorite place to hike. I've been to this falls many times. I've also been with my dad and my son.

4 part series, this is part 1: http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20081019/NEWS/810180225/1007?Title=PART_I__Rescuers__instinct__quick_thinking_helped_Crutchfield_after_near_fatal_fall

Part 2: http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20081020/NEWS/810202998

Part 3 and 4 to come on Tues and Wed.

My partner business partner goes to the same church as the Crutchfields. The family joined just a few weeks before this happened. I'm sure she'll get to hear some pretty amazing stories as he becomes more and more mobile.

Dayhiker...you got any info on the Kinlock area at Sipsey? I'm looking for historical info.

Stew, there used to be a site out there that talked about how local people of Native heritage still meet at Kinlock. If you google Sipsey Kinlock you get lots of photographs from various knuckleheads that backpack and photograph the area. You also get several hits about this fall. I'll see what else I can find.

To internet users who want to go to Sipsey / Bankhead for the first time: hike in the daytime.

The canyons can look much less deep and steep than they are.

It certainly is a miracle he's still around and in such capacity. Pretty obvious now where they were camping based on the pictures. As I suspected, right off the road, between it and the falls. Great spot guys.

Yeah, you'd think those no camping signs would have been a clue not to camp there.

Thanks for posting this read. It was interesting. No experience = trouble.

Do they have a "Darwin Escapee Award" each year as well?
