Opinions about moderation

“It's ridiculous to "okay" a flame on one thread, only to "poo-poo" a retaliation on another

i disagree. Example:
Person A posts something on a fuego thread that person B doesn't agree with. Person B then follows person A to a non-fuego thread, let's say a discussion about tents. It's not fair to the people who are participating in the backpacking related threads to have to read the nasty retaliation that has nothing to do with tents.

Now, I agree with you, if someone "starts" it on fuego then the moderator should deal with it but two wrongs don't make a right.”

other than that, either police the forum 24-7 holding folks responsible for disobeying the Terms of Participation or have a very hands off type of (lack of) moderation.

I've already decided not to participate over on the other side due to the incoherent and biased moderation. I was thinking this place was a little more hands off.

huh??? sorry - don't get the "advertise" comment. As for injuries.... Hikin Mike has about the most serious injury of anyone here (that's reported it) and HE contributes pictures - some of the best ones i've seen from anyone on this site.”

“I never have fuego on and like it that way. kywilderness.com has a disclaimer with their political forum warning that if you go there then you do knowing you might get flamed. If anything gets too bad they warn then delete threads if people can't play nice. If a person continues to cause issues even after being warned then steps should be taken towards banning them. I know this sounds like 'the other side' but if moderation is wanted something like this has to be instituted.

As far as the mud slinging that goes on from time to time it seems that most work it out or duck and do not respond to it.

“I think there should be a few very clear lines that are enforced reliably. Keep the rules to a minimum but enforce the ones you have. I know not everything can be put in clear terms. The supreme court had a very hard time defining obsentity for example, but I think we can have a few.

One would be no threads devoted to personal attacks or bashing anyone.

I agree on the torlls and the identity thieves. Some torlls have been in good natured fun - but I'd be willing to have them all gone.

Some clear line on personal attacks. Arguments build and escalate gradually and its tough to say when someone has crossed the line ("you're wrong," "you're misguided," "you're not thinking," "you're nescient," might push or cross a line, "but screw you #&%!$ for brains" definitely does).
