ummmm, maybe coz the title of the site is "The Backpacker.com" i think most people were drawn here BECAUSE its a BACKPACKING oriented site - to ask the users to actually contribute in some small way (Once in a 12 month period is pretty minimal) to the stated topic of the site to me isn't asking much in order to grant users the privilige to participate here.

but thats just my own whacked out opinion.

It's not a question of being American or a traitor to your real country y2gie, we all know the answer to that, ... so again, it's not the question of that. It's a question of why you didn't have the forsight to get a dog ahead of time, since you often have this problem.

Both sites ban �defamation�. Bp2go just enforces the rules against defamation against the conservatives. If a liberal calls a conservative a liar, or worse, it must be true in his mind. But if a conservative calls a liberal a liar, he has violated the rules against defamation, and gives the poster a box. Bp2go also trolls the site, and removes �untrue� facts he disagrees with, like Obama smoking or that his senior political advisor was born in Iran (both undisputedly true). The bad drives out the good on the other side.

Defamation has a specific definition that is easy to apply. If one disagrees with a post, there is nothing wrong with saying the post is factually untrue. But to call the poster a liar, or worse because of a difference of political opinion is attacking the poster, and not the post. Just hold folks responsible for disobeying the Terms of Participation and apply those rules consistently. Not hard at all.”

“I've always agreed that there should be a "contribution" aspect.

The reason most of us come to this site in the beginning is because a first time user could ask a gear question or for trail data, and get 5-6 responses within a few days. Most of these pple stayed and made wonderful friends.

Now someone pops in as a first time user to ask a question and 4 people call them a troll within seconds(most of these newbs prob don't even know what that is), they are flamed and asked to leave, or the thread is ignored and lost down the page because of all the non-hiking threads. These pple are never seen or heard from again, ever wonder how many great hiking friends we lost due to this?

You used to could look at the recent threads and find all kind of trips, trip reports, new gear, old gear, favorite gear, funny bping stories, etc.

Now you search the recent threads and its politics, ban *insert name*, or 7 out of 20 of the threads are fuego(you think a newbie would know to turn it off the first time?)

I understand Mapes and others comments that this is like a campfire, alot of the talk wanders and hits on things in life. But can't we save some of that for actual campfires.

Can't we be a bit more friendly so that half of the conversations on trips isn't about this person or that person and what they did on TT last week.
