Opinions about moderation

“There's been a lot of back and forth about moderation on trail talk. I've gotten many emails both from people requesting more and less moderation. But I feel like you haven't all had the chance to hear each others' points of view outside the context of very specific situations, and as a moderator, I would like to get a better feel of what the priorities are for current tt users. Please use this thread to comment on how you would like to see the future of tt moderation take shape.

“You cannot provide even handed moderation unless you constantly monitor the board and understand the context of why things are said. Therefore, my suggestion is no moderation at all, other than the breaking of rules such as giving out personal information or making personal threats. There is an abundance of "group-think" on this site, so just because a lot of people are complaining, it doesn't mean they are not the instigators. Those same people often lie about their intentions, and it isn't until later they admit it, or on another website, such as Latta.

So basically, leave things as they have been recently.

One more thing, you need to do something about torlls. People like Hiker19b4. This has been a longstanding rule on trailtalk and it hasn't been enforced lately. You don't need context to see that violators. And don't just ban the torll itself, but the person behind the torll. In this case, roseymonster.

“I started to post that as well rosey but "fuego" is just a label. Flaming will go on whether it has it's own category or not. I don't have a problem with a section for discussions on politics or other controversial topics but it's when it gets vile that turns me off. There are some posters that can ignore that vileness when posting to other threads and there are some posters that carry it with them from thread to thread.”

“There has been very little moderation that I have noticed. Other than banning certain names, which really did nothing to solve any problems they may have created, I haven't seen much moderation. And I like it that way.

Just hold people to the rules you have already set up if you intend to effectively moderate. Keep the fuego category, otherwise that crap will get posted all over the place. I keep it turned off for a reason.

Oh and if you could add an instant message feature, that would be great. We have to go over to latta for that.

again, the issue isn't fuego itself, but how people act on it...i'd love to particpate in some of the fuego topics but people are so nasty it's not even fun sometimes

...and more on this point. When you try to log on to most sites and you can't remember your pass word or ID they have an option right there to email to get the correct ID and password. That would be nice here. With that in place the only reason someone would want to try to make a second ID is for trolling.

You can't effectively moderate personal assaults. For example, y2 is constantly telling other people what they think, and using patronizing speech. A person should be able to respond to that appropriately since it's not something you, as a moderator, would probably delete & punish. Don't try to be the moderation Lord.”
