President Obama twice authorized the military to rescue a U.S. captain held by Somali pirates and whose life appeared to be at risk.

A senior administration official told FOX News that Obama granted the authority on Friday and Saturday to use appropriate force to rescue Capt. Richard Phillips from a lifeboat off the Somali coast. The Pentagon believed Phillips' life was at risk both times, officials said.

A senior administration official said the president's order authorized force for a group of military assets that arrived at the scene late last week. When more resources arrived, Obama added them to a roster of military personnel allowed to engage militarily with the Somali pirates.

“Okay this is getting ridiculous. Look hostage intervention takes some time. You have to identify the targets and understand the area you are entering (um I think Sun Tzu made that comment about all "combat").

A perfect example of jumping off half cocked was the Egyptian raid on a siezed airliner in Crete a number of years ago. The units were unprepared and thus a large number of hostages were killed in the operation. (Leading to the joke "Whats worse than being taken hostage by terrorists? Being rescued by the Egyptian military.")

I have seen hostage situations last significantly longer until the personnel on the ground were positive they had a best chance for success. I am CERTAIN that the hostage specialists knew the best timing. The President made a good call by letting them do it. The navy had the raft under tow which gave them "control" over the vessel as much as could be expected. The situation was controlled until the Pirates began shooting at the ship. Then it became obvious that the hostage was in imminent danger.

Yeah yeah, we all wish we could see resolutions of hostage situations like Dirty Harry (driving a car through a liquor store window and then blowing the bad guys away) but this is real life. You need to gather as much information on the targets, their weapons and capabilities. I am certain that the one pirate in custody was interrogated (infact he was providing excellent information from what I know). And just like any other scene the Command on the ground made the call.



NOW does this mean I just adore him. NO I think his dealing with Iran and North Korea has been weak, his desire for socialisim is misdirected. But I am not going to poo poo every thing he does regardless.

I'll volunteer to go undercover to all of those stupid "Tea Parties" that they will have here in town and take pictures of the nut jobs there and give them to the FBI. They just cause traffic jams and regular people can't find parking places to shop. Maybe I'll set one of those useless American flags on fire and make them look bad.

5. Obama will make the world live in harmony.
We all saw how effective that he was when he went to the G20 meeting overseas. Everyone loves us now.

6. No one will have those vicious guns. I won't have to worry about crime anymore.

7. I will not need electricity or other power that is created by polluting sources. I will just flip a switch, and all the power I need will just come out of the air.

8. The government will give cars and houses to everyone, which will create jobs.

9. Everyone will have a dog like Obama's. We will get free dog food too.
