A national holiday in honor of The One?
Plans are being made to promote a national holiday for Barack Obama, who will become the nation’s 44th president when he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.

“Yes We Can” planning rallies will be at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the downtown McDonald’s restaurant, 1100 Kansas Ave., until Jan. 13. The goals are to secure a national holiday in Obama’s honor, to organize celebrations around his inauguration and to celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12 1809.

At 7:30 a.m. on Inauguration Day, Obama Cake will be served at the downtown McDonald’s, and a celebration is scheduled for 8 p.m. to midnight Jan. 20 at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, 420 S.E. 6th

i already am having a hard time with the guy. i admire him and especially his campaign. even though he was shooting fish in a barrel (c'mon... beating the republicans with a bad economy, a war, and an unpopular house and president?) winning with this many electoral votes is significant and a lot of work. i am willing to give him a shot, esp since i have no choice anymore but...

obama said in his victory speech:

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there.

so... he basically got elected saying "vote for me and this is what i'll do for you" and then when he accepts he backs down saying "gosh, i forgot to say you might have to elect me TWICE."

we have ALREADY been lied to.

when he was gunning for my vote he did not say, "vote for me and in a term or two i'll get all this stuff done". this is called bait-and-switch... or more commonly a "lie".

get ready for the bit let-down because it's coming. the fire-up of the next election will be in two years so we will see what he gets done between now and then.

I believe both Bush and Clinton said the same thing. This is not to let him off the hook but merely to point out that Obama is not different. He has done the same thing every other politician does. All the doe eyed political journalists who got boners from day one with Obama are already soft peddling his promises and how he won't be able to keep most of them.

I'm sure the majority of Americans will be under-whelmed with him but there will be those who are simply and irreversibly smitten to the end with him.

But as you said, let's give him the shot and the benefit of the doubt before we take a huge dump on his head.

The first year or two there will be a lot of resonance, but I believe it will fade as interests in the democratic party revert to agendas for personal power. I just can't see Obama controlling power hungry people like Pelosi for very long. Biden will serve well in his capacity as cabinet stuffer and hatchet man (in my mind he equals business as usual at the White House) so a reversion from the "New America" is not far off. .

I'd like to say I'm surprised by those who appear to hate Obama (perhaps 'hate' isn't the right word, but there's certainly a very strong dislike)... ...but I'm not surprised at all.

When Bush was 'elected' President in 2000, Gore had the popular vote but Bush had the Electoral College vote... This clearly shows that 'Most Americans' didn't want Bush as their President.
(Bush: 50,456,002 Gore: 50,999,897)

Not exactly an overwhelming victory... yet Bush (and Bush supporters) claimed the people had spoken... And when 9-11 came along there was a golden opportunity to Unify the American People... ...but he didn't do that.

And when people criticized his handling of 9-11 (and many other things) those of you on the Right said that those of us on the Left were "Unamerican!". I remember hearing things like, "He's the President of the United States and if you don't support him then you don't support America!" (or some such horse crap.)

Then in 2004 Bush won the Electoral College vote: Bush: 286, Kerry: 252.
This was the smallest margin of victory of any incumbent President in something like 100 years... Again, not exactly a resounding victory! Yet Bush claimed it as a "MANDATE".

...and again, there were years of the Right claiming that those on the Left who don't support the President are downright Treasonous!!!

Well... Here we are with President-Elect Obama who won with over 7 MILLION more votes than McCain and only 10 EC Votes shy of an official "Landslide". Mandate? You Betcha!

So...

"We The People" have spoken. We American Citizens have gone to the polls and voted. We have taken the direction of this country into our own hands and we've made a clear decision.

So... those of you on the right... put your money where your mouth is. Support the President of the United States. Or are you Un-American?

See? All this Bachmann "Un-American" CRAP is really stoopid... I believe you do love this country and I believe you are good Americans... But you've really gotta start ACTING like it.

In this country, THE PEOPLE govern themselves by way of electing their leaders... Sometimes things swing Right... sometimes they swing Left... I suppose it's possible there will be a third... ...or fourth... party that could come along one day and we'd find ourselves going an entirely different direction all together...

...and if, and when, that happens... will you consider those American's as Un-American?

Thing is: The United States isn't just one thing. It's whatever "We The People" decide it is...

So, please... knock it off with all your hate speech and condescension.

To think that you in the clear Minority somehow know what's best for the Majority is insulting. Let the People govern themselves and jump in and help in any way you can...

Spend the next 4 to 8 years developing your message... developing your policies... developing your approach at appealing to the masses (and their votes)... that's fine. That's constructive. That's expected.

But don't beat down your neighbors and fellow citizens. That destructive...

...then again... ...look who I'm appealing to here...

...Like I said in the beginning... ...I'm not surprised

this is some seriously twisted sh*t. you start out your little diatribe by making an argument that is so weak you need to use quotes ('') and parsing to get it to float. after slamming what you clearly feel is the "worthless half of the voting population" you then come out and talk about not beating down on our neighbors?

THEN you have the nerve to say "look who i'm appealing to here".

i'll tell you what you need to do... look into your minds mirror and see yourself reflected in the words you use to characterize the behavior of others.

I know for sure I heard Bush say, "You're either with us or against us." I clearly remember members of the Right accusing members of the Left of being traitors and not being Patriotic because they didn't support the President. Perhaps you need the mirror.

'Obama Ready to RULE on Day 1'

The co-chair of Barack Obama's Transition Team, Valerie Jarrett, appeared on Meet the Press this weekend and used, shall we say, an interesting word to described what she thinks Barack Obama will be doing in January when he's officially sworn into office. She told Tom Brokaw that Obama will be ready to "rule" on day one. It's a word that reflects the worst fears that people have for Obama the "arrogant," the "messiah," that imagines he's here to "rule" instead of govern.

You guys were saying "Bipartisan promise broken" the minute he named Emmanuel. Sheesh... Give him a little time, would ya. I'll bet he surprises you with just how fair he'll be.

And then there are these headlines from today:

Obama will rely upon “a trio of Bush appointees” to “tackle the country’s most serious challenges.” Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Adm. Michael Mullen and FBI director Robert Mueller “will likely stay in place for at least the first year or two of Obama’s presidency.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/09/AR2008110902555.html

i am an american and believe in democracy. i respect that our democracy has spoken and i likewise respect the values and opinions of my neighbors that voted for him.

i simply can't stomach the liberal elitism that chooses to parse language like ickyma:

When Bush was 'elected' President in 2000, Gore had the popular vote but Bush had the Electoral College vote... This clearly shows that 'Most Americans' didn't want Bush as their President.
(Bush: 50,456,002 Gore: 50,999,897)

this is a statement that proves that ickyma is un-american and doesn't support democracy. it is so weak it has to use parsing and quotes ('') to make it float. you probably would say, "well, technically this is true yogi." go for it. you'll convince yourself but only piss off 1/2 of the country whose votes you chose to distort.

and for the record, the president is NOT elected by the popular vote. we live in a REPRESENTATIONAL DEMOCRACY. this is very important because almost every aspect of how you are represented in government is run based on representation and not the result of a direct popular vote. the bottom line is bush WAS elected (no quotes) because he got more electoral votes. if you don't like the way your state voted then move to another. you don't vote directly for the president any more than you vote on bills that are brought before the house and senate. learn how our democracy works before you criticize it.

then you go and say we should work together?

until you learn to respect the values and beliefs of 1/2 this country and stop treating them like an irrelevant form of hanging chad you are never going to get what you are looking for... because you don't deserve it.

Yogi... I think you misread my post.

I recognize that the country was split right down the middle... but it was hard to tell that at the time... one would have thought the Right had hung the moon... what with all their talk of Mandates and all...

BTW, I rather like the Electoral College and you're probably right... I shouldn't have said 'elected'... I should have said: elected. I was just pointing out that more Americans actually voted for Gore... but the Republicans didn't treat it that way.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/nov/11/exclusive-obama-deletes-agenda-from-transition-web/

Agenda disappears from Obama Web site

Over the weekend President-elect Barack Obama scrubbed Change.gov, his transition Web site, deleting most of what had been a massive agenda copied directly from his campaign Web site.

Gone are the promises on how an Obama administration would handle 25 different agenda items - everything from Iraq and immigration to taxes and urban policy - all items laid out on his campaign Web site, www.BarackObama.com

Instead, the official agenda on Change.gov has been boiled down to one vague paragraph proclaiming a plan “to revive the economy, to fix our health care, education, and social security systems, to define a clear path to energy independence, to end the war in Iraq responsibly and finish our mission in Afghanistan, and to work with our allies to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, among many other domestic and foreign policy objectives.” .....
