So, a friend of mine accidentally broke his girlfriend's lantern and wants to replace it with a "better one." I know nothing about lanterns (I've always been fine with flashlights and campfires), but thought I'd do a little research and see if any of you guys could recommend a good camp lantern.

If it is the globe that broke, you can buy a replacement mesh screen to replace the globe. It does block a little of the light, but you don't have to worry about broken glass..

We just use the stndard coleman ones.. I don't even get the ones with the ignition switch as they usually fail after awhile.

Could you be a bit more specific?
Candle?
Gas?
Coleman?
Battery?

Only pack horses like Supertroll carry lanterns.

I have a nice Coleman for car camping.

well, it was a coleman gas lantern... but he wouldn't object to going electric. He just doesn't want to get her some piece of crap replacement.

The problem is that he knows nothing about camping gear in general, and I know nothing about lanterns

we have a coleman propane powered lantern for hunting and car camping and what not. It's super bright don't get a kerosene (if they even make them anymore) cause they're kinda dangerous and not very bright and we have to constantly pump ours to keep it going. my friend has the backpacker kind that runs on iso-butane and it was about as bright as our coleman. I don't have any experience with the l.e.d. lanterns but I personally won't trust those electric things due to personaly bad experiences, until I see someone that has one that they can swear by.

It can helps
I have used coleman white gas lantern, works really good, but they´re heavy (40 usd).

Other lantern are coleman compact lite F1 propane lantern(20-25 usd), works great, really light and small size.

Brunton Lucy lantern (45 usd)propane /iso-butane is great small, bright, and really light.

Camping gaz (35 usd)is a good lantern, but spare parts are difficult to find.

Have a nice camp!

I like the 2AA 360° 'Extreme' for stargazing applications.   I'll set up one on each end of a picnic table then I can go back to the campsite without frying my eyeballs.   If your eyes are already dark adapted they seem plenty bright, but they crank out less than a candle-lantern.... and they're weatherproof.   There's no flame or melted wax flying around,   LOL

And just like they say, they don't attract bugs at all.  I can vouch for the white ones.

hmmmm.....   They say the new AAA version puts out the same amount of light for the same length of time as the AA model....
