Hikin'
Cant make the dec 6th Jesus hike, so I created this one for the following weekend!

The plan is to hike the northern section of the Knobstone-starting at Delaney Park-between 7-10 miles each day. Final route planning to be determined/flexible depending on turn out.

-Friday night camping is avialable
-This route is pending a trail conditions report-subject to change.
-Map link to be posted soon.

Warning: this trail can be very rigorous over tough terrain; and Winter hiking/camping posses additional risks that may be dangerous. Hike at your own risk.

Carpacking-just kidding-back packing. Will probably head down friday nite. Ill know for sure on that by tomorrow.

-Still looking at the map for best route, but was thinking the 9 mile route from delaney park to spurgeon hollow lake to camp. Or continue towards Oxley memorial (Im not sure if the path towards Oxley is very scenic or not-never been that way).

Are you talking about doing both the Delaney Park Loop and the Spurgeon Hollow Loop? Are you thinking of caching water or looking for it on the trail?

Yes both loops. starting at delaney, heading north, then around the bottom loop to spurgeon hollow lake to camp. (skiping the connector loop section)

-I just planned on using lake water, and using one of crash's boots to break through any ice there may be! Ha. JK crash

And if Crash's boot doesn't do it, we can throw him in to break the ice, j/k. There's a nice camp spot just past the Trail head of Spurgeon Lake, but right before you get to the loop part of the trail. I'm sure there are others, but that's the only one I remember in that area, lol.

Due to Timber management in the area, the connector trail in the Delaney/Spurgeon loop area is closed until further notice. Once the timber management is done, the trail will re-open.

Hiking through this area on October 13, there are several areas where Timber Mgmt will be harvesting trees. Notably along the creek bed approaching Spurgeon

yeah I read this on the dnr site Ill post it later....but basically the spurgeon hollow loop portion is closed, and the Eastern part of the delaney loop is open but re-routed.

So if we start at delaney we'll have to go around the northern loop area then head down the southside, then head towards Oxley memorial trialhead instead of spurgeon hollow lake as I had planned. Unless we bushwhack to a camp site around spurgeon hollow lake, which looks quite lengthy/arduous from that part of the trail-
Ill post the web link of the re-route and closure area

heres the link below. We could take the re-route and head towards Oxley trailhead area- see numbers 40 and 39 on the linked map below

11-07-08 update. The following trail sections have been cleared:
The direct path from Delaney Trailhead to the Spurgeon Trailhead (about three miles)
The shortcut between the Delaney loop and the Spurgeon Loop.
The re-route around the timber harvest area (see map below)
From the New Chapel trailhead to mile marker 19.5
From Deam Lake trailhead to mile marker 10.5

It looks like the reroute is along an old mail route road.

It looks to be West Point Rd. On the map I have, this is one of the roads to take to get from one trail head to another. However,I've don't think I've ever driven on the part that looks like where the trail has been rerouted. My guess is that it is paved. The road goes right by where the 41d mile maker is as well. It might be a good place to cache some water since there's no way to get near Spurgein Hollow Lake. Are you looking to set up a shuttle?

wasnt planning to shuttle. Probably just hike point to point. Not exactly sure on the points yet. I have a call in to the ranger to find out if the conector trail is open stil (45a-44d).

I believe that part is now open. The section between 41s to 43s is still showing closed. It would be great if they had that section open by now. Good luck getting someone to call you back. I've never had much luck with them.

I confirmed the info we already had about trail section status today. The
reroute and closed section still remain. The north part of delaney loop may have
some blowdowns, but the rest of the trail sections below have been cleared.
Some route possibilities are below. Im partial to choice 3.

Windi do you think you're going to make it? Looks like we'll be camping close to a trailhead one way or another.

1. delaney north loop, using connector trail, to spurgeon hollow lake=aprox 7
miles (numbers: 47,46,45,44d,44,43s)
2. delaney north loop, reroute, towards oxley, and camp near Arnold creek-aprox
8 miles. (#s:47,46,45,44,reroute,41,40)
3. start at delaney, use connector trail to reroute then on to Elk creeek
lake-aprox 13 miles. (#s: 45s,44d,reroute,41,40, on to elk creek lake)
4. delaney north loop, to rereoute, then bushwhack to spurgeon hollow lake.
aprox 9 miles

so, what is closed exactly?
crash bang
12:27:10 PM
12/10/08

here's my suggestion: elk creek trailhead to delaney (about 14 miles) with a water cache at new cut road (just north of mile 38). we would have to camp at delaney and shuttle around in the morning.

but i'm not at all adamant about it. the only thing i insist on is that we're hiking the majority of daylight hours

i like the idea of bushwacking, but one problem. if the north is anything like the south, the stickers are TERRIBLE
crash bang
12:33:54 PM

now i see you already mentioned doing delaney to elk creek that would be even better since we could shuttle fri nite and start hiking from delaney sat morn

good call, bruh
