“The wife and I are considering renting an RV and going on a road trip for our family vacation next summer. Anyone ever rent one? What company did you use? What was your experience? Where did you go? Any good recommendations on where we should go? Don't want anything too far away like the west coast but want something we could spend a day or two at one location then drive a few hours to the next one and so on. We were thinking the Great Lakes region, New England, or maybe the south east.” 6:30:43 AM 12/12/08 “$125 a day and something like a buck a mile over 400 + gas at 6 mpg I decided not to do it. IMHO it is cheaper to take a leisurly drive and stay in a good hotel.” 6:46:06 AM 12/12/08 “after some preliminary number crunches i was thinking the same thing...however, we will be traveling with a 1 and 3 year old so we were thinking it might be handy to have the RV” 6:49:57 AM 12/12/08 “Stay in the old kind of outdoor corridor motels that still get AAA ratings.” 6:53:30 AM 12/12/08 “An RV is handy with the kids. But then again, so is a van with the middle seat taken out.” 6:57:19 AM 12/12/08 “Here's my RV. LOL 7:25:09 AM 12/12/08 “stovie, i've always wanted a teardrop...maybe when the kids get old enough to stay in a tent by their selves we'll get one...did you make yours?” 7:30:19 AM 12/12/08 “The basic homemade trailer was bought on eBay from a guy in Georgia. I finished it. (I'm still not able to handle large heavy items)” 7:37:31 AM 12/12/08 “Post an add on Craigslist. Many people who own RVs and don't use them much are willing to rent them cheaper than you can rent them from RV America or another company. Local dealerships also have rentals. If you have a truck renting a TT is a lot cheaper than a motorized RV. I love my RV and it came in really handy last year on our two week trip through New England. Hiked more trails than I would have backpacking and got to take a shower every night. Here is my RV: ![]() It's actually for sale as 25FT is not enough room for as much as we use it, we are getting a 31FTer with double slides, over twice the space of that one. We leave it parked at a permanent campsite 1.5hrs from where we live in a wilderness area. Not only do we use it for vacation, one two week trip and one one week trip, we end up using it every other weekend as a basecamp from our permanent site. From there we go kayaking, hiking, canoeing, and sometimes we rent horses. We call it a poor man's cabin and it has been great for the family as I have been able to get family members who have nothing to do with the outdoors into the outdoors. I probably did more hiking (day) this year than any other year in my life and spent more time with my family doing it. If you have a truck a travel trailer is a great investment and qualifies as a second house so you can write the interest off your taxes.” 11:18:52 AM 12/12/08 “thrifty, I have always wanted a teardrop too! There are some really interesting ones out there now that have been refurbished.” 11:40:58 AM 12/12/08 “thanks for the info dub...as the kids get older i'd really like to do the same thing...my wife says "...and what are you going to do if the kids don't end up liking the outdoors?", answer: "Adoption"” 12:03:51 PM 12/12/08 “I have a class A r.v. that my wife and I just couldn't do without back in the 90's. It was great until the gas prices got so out of control. Ours has a 60 gallon tank and gets around 9 mpg. So for a little over $100.00 (currently) we can go pretty much anywhere in the state and return as a 1 tank trip. Like most everything these days...you have to pay to play.” 5:36:03 AM 12/13/08 “Cool trailer, stove.” 12:54:09 PM 12/13/08
