I talked to Crash I don't have a GPS anymore I sold it but I wil look on the National Geo Map and see what it lines up to if you are coming in on Friday Night Late or want the quick way in to the campsite I would start over at Grube Ridge Trailhead and then go down the Peninsula Trail and Bushwach a short distance off the Peninsula Trail after you get on the Peninsula Trail if it is still daylight keep the Lake on your right side when the trail turns to the west leave the trail and follow along the lake just stay high on the ridge and it will take you right to it.I have the map packed away out in the garage for our trip let me go get it.

thursday night i am going to camp with meangreen and yogisan at the leota trailhead on the knobstone. friday morning i am going to drive to hayes trailhead on the northwest side of the deam, and bushwack to the first nights campsite. it is on the east side of the peninsula, about halfway down. see link for map. saturday i will hike to just beyond, and north of, the mouth of axsom creek. sunday i will hike out to the grubb ridge trailhead.

late friday arrivals should park at grubb ridge trailhead and take the grubb ridge to the peninsula trail. go about 20 minutes north on the peninsula trail. you will then see a big drop-off to your right for several minutes (if you look at a topo map, you will see that the trail is right up against the edge of what looks like a steep drop-off). after that drop off ends, there is a wooden erosion bar. that is where you will leave the trail and head downhill in a more or less northerly direction. use the lake off to your right to guide you downhill while staying on the ridge. after a while, it will become obvious that you are heading down a small ridge with a little holler to the left and the lake to the right. this eventually becomes a small peninsula which coyote and i have been referring to as "the thumb". if you want, call me when you get to the trailhead, and i will meet you before you have to go off-trail. my number is 765-461-6500

this is also a good trip for anyone who wants to paddle. all the campsites are on the water

crash, if i drop off a care package at your place on Wednesday night, can you bring it with you to Leota? that would save the captn' and i having to hide our gear at leota. no worries if it won't work out.

Well, it looks like I'll be joining you all on Friday night with Yogi. i might as well. It's on my way home, and it's not much fun car camping alone at Deam Lake. Besides, I'll get to hang out with some more good friends!

hayes to thumb area is my fav bushwhack there. lol

N 39.05653 W 86.37202 are coordinates of the edge of the tall pine stand on top of the hill that i have always called "eagle's nest"... just after this the trail starts descending and starts turning left and you basically want to stay on N5W course or so and depart the trail down the top of the "thumb" ridge.

if you know your way the bushwhack from hayes is easier, shorter and faster then grubb ridge trial but don't do it in the dark if you don't know the area.

i was thinking of possibly joining you all on saturday night but i am axiom camping is not my favorite and i just have been there last couple of times so, we'll see..

you know what, actually, he's right. it is a shorter distance. the way i'm doing it, im not doing a direct bushwack (and so it's longer), but if you came in from hayes trailhead, and cut across the peninsula instead of going around it like i am, you could get there faster than from grubb ridge, especially when you consider you could cut out that long drive in to the trailhead. for someone with a gps, it would not be difficult at all

the only problem is, if there are no other cars parked at grubb ridge sunday morning, it's a long hike from the mouth of the axsom to hayes trailhead. as long as ij doesnt bail, and parks at grubb ridge, i would suggest you come from hayes

meangreen, part of the deal for me is that i'm supposed to do a shakedown b'pack there with some noobs but i am not sure if they're up for it. let me find out for sure and maybe i can figure out a way of getting down there on friday instead. the other thing is that my truck is down and most likely still will be this weekend. so i have no ride to the TH. lol are you guys also hiking the KT earlier in the week?

cb, when are you getting there on friday? is anyone else coming on friday morn from indy, maybe?

Offy, dude, I didn't mean to put any pressure on you what so ever. We all hike our own hike, and you will get there when you can. That's cool.
Yes, Yogisan and I are hiking the whole KT on Thursday and Friday, then joining Crash and the Gang on Friday night in the Deam. As I understand it I will be headed home on Saturday morning but Yogi will be hiking on with Crash on Saturday & Sunday. (I bet he's walking funny at work on Monday for sure!)

well, looks like i have at least one interested on my end here.. so, we wouldn't be down in the area until close to dark if we come on friday even. not sure yet.. in any case, i have an idea where you'll be when and if we can't meet up this time then we'll just have to wait till the next opportunity presents itself. :D
