It seems like half my fracking family got an MP3 of some kind this Christmas, but none of us know about which sites to get music from. I heard Lime Wire was good. Does anyone have any suggestions? Only interested in the legal kind.

I use Limewire...haven't had any complaints here. My only advice is to change your settings to not share your "shared" folder...

Only once was there something I couldn't find...Omar Cunningham "Check to Check"...

been using it for years and that was the only song I've never been able to get there. Luckily Omar doesnt make or break my music library..but it is a good one..lol

p.s. I use the free trial. If I'm not mistaken Limewire claims the paid version produces more results. Here again...I've never had a problem even with the free version. But if you start looking "Check to Check" just let me know and I'll hook ya up

I had a bad experience with the older free version of limewire. I got a bad virus that crashed my computer several times a day. Norton Anti-virus could not get rid of it. After four months of problems, I switched to McAfee which got rid of the problem and I never went back.

Beware of the iTunes sight which charges you $.99 a download, but send it to you in a M4P format, not allowing you to copy it on a DVD for your car. I use Amazon for purchasing music now because all their music in on Mp3 format which copies on to disk without problems.

I was very anti-Itunes with my first mp3 player (Sansdisk). I won an Ipod Classic at a Christmas party two years ago and I have become a convert because it is so easy. I bought a cable for the home stereo and an adapter for my head Ipod compatible car stereo and it is awesome. All of my CDs are on my Ipod and I just move it around. I am able to listen to so much more music since I don't have to lug around CDs. I find that I am revisiting a lot of old CDs that I have not listened in some time and with Itunes I can find the current releases of these bands.

my kid uses I-tunes and it hasn't messed up my computer or turned off my refrigerator or anything like that. I did hear her say you can only connect your ipod to 5 different computers. don't know if that's true or not but shes pretty sharp on the computer.

don't use limewire, it will mess up your computer.

if you want to use a peer to peer program try either Ares Lite or Soulseek, both of those are really good.

if you know how to use torrents use either
btjunkie.com or thepiratebay.org

ALSO- in the news the other day the RIAA has had almost all of its funding cut off from the record labels. They will no longer taking individuals to court for downloading if i read the articles correct.

I couldn't tell you exactly how torrents work, but I know to get them you need both a downloading client and a website.

For the downloader, I've used Azureus Vuze for a few years now without a single complaint.

And for the websites, I either use www.thepiratebay.org or www.mininova.org

they usually have just about anything I'm looking for

stay away from limewire or emule or all that stuff - they're loaded with spy/ad ware that'll totally mess up your computer

as far as keeping "safe" while using Azureus, it's the people who share a lot of stuff who get busted. When you download a file, it's etiquette to at least share it until the share ratio for it is 1.0 (meaning you've allowed others to download the same amount of data from you as you've downloaded), but make sure you don't share things too much more than that. I doubt you'd raise a red flag (I think the people who're occasionally getting busted for this are sharing hundreds and hundreds of gigabytes of movies, music, etc), but it's a good way to play it safe.

Also, some clowns like to put viruses and all that nasty stuff onto torrent sites in the guise of music/movies/tv shows. The best way around this is to read the comments of a file before you download it. They'll say pretty quickly if it's a bogus file. And the more seeds, the more likely it's a good file (plus, the more likely, you'll be able to download it all the way)

pepsi explained it well. essentially you download the extension from btjunkie or the site of your choice. then once the extension is downloaded, it will automatically open in your program i.e. bitcomet or azureus. once it is done downloading you can share it for a bit then remove it and enjoy.

torrents are far easier and safer as a means of obtaining programs, movies and music. most sites will have comments on whether or not the file is safe and they do a good job of removing malicious files.

using torrents is easier as well becuase the risk of getting in trouble is next to zero. you have to be sharing more than a tera byte to even get flagged from sharing.

defintaley stay away from limewire its a horrible p2p that will mess up your computer.

This is one I am using simple and fast.

http://www.utorrent.com/

So far I have had no problems with limewire but I run firefox and have it set to dump when I close the browser. I also run AVG Free and Zonealarm Free so that might be why I don't have problems.

haha, oh, oops, missed that part about legality.

in that case, iTunes is pretty good. Amazon also has a decent selection of legal music downloads and it's usually a couple bucks cheaper than iTunes.

i dont really care about legality. with the news about RIAA being cut back you shouldn't have to worry about it.

i've never like itunes for the simple fact that they put all thier music in mp4 which can't be shared with non ipod users, burned on cds or anything else.
travis

12/31/08

you can still burn mp4s to cd, but you have to use iTunes to do it. And I think you can only burn them to a CD a certain number of times. It's lame

if I'm looking for something, I'll check the torrent sites first, then Amazon, then iTunes as a last resort...

there was at one time a completely legal and legit russian site called allofmp3.com which sold full albums for 99 cents each. The feds rushed to try and make it illegal and I think eventually shut the site down, but there's a few other sites like it floating around.
