Suggestions for backpackingView MessagesIdeas? “I live in eastern nc. Moved here about 8 years ago. I havent been backpacking in forever. I am looking for some good trails for maybe a four day trip. The western part of the state is about a 4 1/2 hour drive for me. Looking for some good ideas from those of you who frequent these parts.” 7:13:15 PM 1/05/09 “You must think this is a backpacking website.” 7:15:21 PM 1/05/09 “Kinda seemed like it. I am new to this site, been looking on here for about 2 weeks now.” 7:23:00 PM 1/05/09 “Don't mind me. I'm just here for the free beer.” 7:26:41 PM 1/05/09 “Here's a few sites that look promising... Slackpacker TheBackpacker.com NC Page North Carolina Outdoors N.C. is beautiful. I drove through there this fall and was slobbering all over the car because I wanted to stop and hike.” 7:30:30 PM 1/05/09 “I like the looks of linville.” 7:51:51 PM 1/05/09 “If you can get away on Jan 16, they's a big group of TT'ers basecamping and visiting there, you should check that out. That would put a lot of faces to all these mysterious names on here. Eastern part of NC bites the big one as far as backpacking. Head beyond the Piedmont and you'll do good. Uwharrie is OK for a quickie, but that will get old fast. Anywhere beyond the Piedmont and you'll do great. And, welcome to TT. I'm in Waynesville, lil bit farther than Asheville.” 8:01:43 PM 1/05/09 “http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/52272,4.php I hope that works. Nemster that Linville trip is here. If that don't work, check out "You should go on this trip BUT........!"” 8:04:44 PM 1/05/09 “what part of eastern nc?” 8:08:15 PM 1/05/09 “Come on and join the festivities!!! This will be 9th Annual Git Together!” 8:12:32 PM 1/05/09 “YOUR part GNM. LOL!” 8:31:15 PM 1/05/09 “not likely if they can be in the western part of the state in 4 1/2 hours. MG it doesn't get more homegrown east than ME! lol p.s. to the NIGGE...ya'll came thru NC..well ef!!! last edited: 1/05/09 8:20:36 PM” 8:33:15 PM 1/05/09 “Rocky Mount. ANd yes eastern NC blows for anything like that.” 8:35:07 PM 1/05/09 “Hey Nemster, me and Hyway live in S.E. NC., right on the coast. The closest place to hike for us is the Croatan Nat Forest and Uwharrie. Both places are approx. 3.5-4 hr drives. Both areas are not the most exciting places to hike, but they are better than nothing.” 8:37:47 PM 1/05/09 “....RKY MT??....sAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUT Howdy Neighbor! ROFL...damn you MG!” 8:39:36 PM 1/05/09 “GNM......where r u?” 8:41:21 PM 1/05/09 “What are the ages here.......I might feel like the older person.” 8:41:54 PM 1/05/09 “the City on the Rise!” 8:42:54 PM 1/05/09 “Hey, I work in rmt but live in Nashville. Small world” 8:44:11 PM 1/05/09 “it'll take me a few days to believe you're not a regular poster screwing with me right now....LOL.... but welcome to thebackpacker!! NC GROUP HUG!!! that Neusiok Trail over at Croatan is good this time of year if you want to go farther east...any other time you'll get toted off by mosquitos and heat exhaustion...just ask wildbill.. Uwharrie for a start...but naked is right...it'll begin to blow quickly. buckle up and get ready to roll farther west last edited: 1/05/09 8:36:39 PM” 8:50:30 PM 1/05/09 “I will actually be on call starting that weekend so that wont work. kind of a loner, so a large group would probably make me feel strange.” 8:51:10 PM 1/05/09 “I would much rather be near the mountains. I dont care to go farther east than i am unless i hit the beach a couple of times. A regular poster?? No, dont think so.....I work for animal control in rmt.” 8:53:37 PM 1/05/09 “I was just suggesting the Croatan notion thinking you may be easing back into the mileage aspect..gear testing etc. you could do Uwharrie from S N or N to S whichever on the Dutchman & Uwharrie Trails but that would never get you 4 days...or maybe it could http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/uwharrie/uwharrectrl.htm last edited: 1/05/09 8:55:40 PM” 8:58:14 PM 1/05/09 “Thanks GNM....I will look that one up tomorrow. I appreciate all the info.” 9:08:17 PM 1/05/09 “Actually Uwharrie ain't all that bad, I have hiked there so many times that I am just burned out on it. It is true, there are no real views, or waterfalls or things most hikers like to see, but it is in the woods, and there are a few ups and downs. The highest peak is only about 800 ft, but like I said earlier, it is better than nothing.” 9:10:24 PM 1/05/09 “I'm thinking of going up there sometime soon to do another shake down with Rufus. Bill..I hated to read of your recent knee issue. be sure to update as things progress...if you need some recovery gear/braces etc..YOU CAN HAVE MINE!! :)” 9:12:44 PM 1/05/09 “I was actually thinking of doing the same thing, maybe just do the bottom loop as a Sat or Sun dayhike. I will have to wait and see how it goes. I am wearing a brace right now and tomorrow I will start the steriods, so everyone stay away. The last time I took those things I turned into a monster. BTW GNM I still owe you a big favor....” 9:19:27 PM 1/05/09 “there are nice trails around mt. mitchel” 9:54:11 PM 1/05/09 “I second the Mount Mitchel suggestion.. Also, Mocs has a Memorial Day weekend trip posted for the Art Loeb trail, and you have the Mountain to Sea trail... Animal control? You and DORK will get along great!!!!!!!!! '32oz” 4:31:59 AM 1/06/09 “I was just in Wilson for work last fall. I'd think Rocky Mount might be as close if not slightly closer to some of the good VA terrain, like the Pedlar District south of Shenandoah NP. Mapquest says 4 hr 16 min from Rocky Mt to Montebello, VA.” 5:48:22 AM 1/06/09 Silly suggestions! “GSMNP has it all for you. And it's just a little ways down I-40 for you. What could be better?” 8:06:00 AM 1/06/09 “Hey, I hear the Grand Canyon has some pretty good hiking trails.” 8:24:08 AM 1/06/09 “the Whites are great too.” 8:36:30 AM 1/06/09 “does anyone have links to some places in VA? What about DORK? Why do you say that 32?” 10:30:54 AM 1/06/09 10:42:43 AM 1/06/09 “Do you have something against DORKs?” 10:42:50 AM 1/06/09 “GNM.. That is the easy way to do it.. You have to start at RT56 hike North on the AT and then South on the MarHar trail... Then hike South Up to the Priest for an even better work out.... '32oz” 10:50:04 AM 1/06/09 “dude...I'm with ya...but tobesure nemster can figure taht part out. Whatchu want me to do? spoonfeed? dang.” 10:52:12 AM 1/06/09 “I guess I need to plan a trip there this summer/spring.. after all, pain is good... '32oz” 11:01:11 AM 1/06/09 “The map i see on that site i dont see the AT close to rt56. Its not the best detailed map though.” 11:13:22 AM 1/06/09 “after all, pain is good... '32oz” That's what I used to think.” 11:26:25 AM 1/06/09 “TROLL...First post says he lives in NC.....;Post 19 says he lives in Nashville, WORKS in Rocky Mount... Well?..SOMEBODY has to call him a Troll right off, it's TRADITIONAL!” 11:36:02 AM 1/06/09 “nashville is a small town in nash county near rocky mount.” 12:22:11 PM 1/06/09 “Nashville, NC is about 8 miles west of Rocky Mount. I get that a lot, most people as soon as they here Nashville they think Tenn. I guees I will have to Troll right backi at ya.” 12:37:18 PM 1/06/09 “Well Nemster....WELCOME TO TRAIL TALK!” 12:46:48 PM 1/06/09 “Ok, here is another one. I have some really crappy hiking boots. I need to get me another pair before I start up this spring. I like the med height for ankle support. Any good suggestions? I ask so I dont end up buying another pair that arent worth anything. The last ones ended up being painful to walk in.” 1:58:27 PM 1/06/09 “Try Trail Runners instead” 2:01:18 PM 1/06/09 “ebay man, just study and watch........ you'll land a great pair look at reviews first, then check out ebay (be sure to check out their feedback page too)” 11:49:30 PM 1/06/09 “If you buy from ebay, I would go to a few outfitters first and try on different brands and note how they fit, because all brands and sizes are different. I usually wear a 10.5, but sometimes I have to wear 11 or a 10.5 wide.” 2:21:20 AM 1/07/09 “Nakedape is my good friend but this is one thing that I strongly disagree with him on! I'm a Cheap A$$ on all kinds of stuff but I've learned that when it comes to boots ya gotta have them on your feet before making a decision. Go to REI and have someone that knows what they are doing help you find a good pair of boots. Don't buy them on Ebay!!!” 3:43:03 AM 1/07/09
