Ideas?
I live in eastern nc. Moved here about 8 years ago. I havent been backpacking in forever. I am looking for some good trails for maybe a four day trip. The western part of the state is about a 4 1/2 hour drive for me. Looking for some good ideas from those of you who frequent these parts.

N.C. is beautiful. I drove through there this fall and was slobbering all over the car because I wanted to stop and hike.

If you can get away on Jan 16, they's a big group of TT'ers basecamping and visiting there, you should check that out. That would put a lot of faces to all these mysterious names on here.

Eastern part of NC bites the big one as far as backpacking. Head beyond the Piedmont and you'll do good. Uwharrie is OK for a quickie, but that will get old fast. Anywhere beyond the Piedmont and you'll do great.

And, welcome to TT. I'm in Waynesville, lil bit farther than Asheville.

Hey Nemster, me and Hyway live in S.E. NC., right on the coast. The closest place to hike for us is the Croatan Nat Forest and Uwharrie. Both places are approx. 3.5-4 hr drives. Both areas are not the most exciting places to hike, but they are better than nothing.

it'll take me a few days to believe you're not a regular poster screwing with me right now....LOL....

but welcome to thebackpacker!!

NC GROUP HUG!!!

that Neusiok Trail over at Croatan is good this time of year if you want to go farther east...any other time you'll get toted off by mosquitos and heat exhaustion...just ask wildbill..

Uwharrie for a start...but naked is right...it'll begin to blow quickly.

buckle up and get ready to roll farther west

I will actually be on call starting that weekend so that wont work. kind of a loner, so a large group would probably make me feel strange.

I would much rather be near the mountains. I dont care to go farther east than i am unless i hit the beach a couple of times. A regular poster?? No, dont think so.....I work for animal control in rmt.

I was just suggesting the Croatan notion thinking you may be easing back into the mileage aspect..gear testing etc.

you could do Uwharrie from S N or N to S whichever on the Dutchman & Uwharrie Trails but that would never get you 4 days...or maybe it could

Actually Uwharrie ain't all that bad, I have hiked there so many times that I am just burned out on it. It is true, there are no real views, or waterfalls or things most hikers like to see, but it is in the woods, and there are a few ups and downs. The highest peak is only about 800 ft, but like I said earlier, it is better than nothing.

I'm thinking of going up there sometime soon to do another shake down with Rufus. Bill..I hated to read of your recent knee issue. be sure to update as things progress...if you need some recovery gear/braces etc..YOU CAN HAVE MINE!! :)

I was actually thinking of doing the same thing, maybe just do the bottom loop as a Sat or Sun dayhike. I will have to wait and see how it goes. I am wearing a brace right now and tomorrow I will start the steriods, so everyone stay away. The last time I took those things I turned into a monster.
BTW GNM I still owe you a big favor....

I second the Mount Mitchel suggestion..
Also, Mocs has a Memorial Day weekend trip posted for the Art Loeb trail, and you have the Mountain to Sea trail...

Animal control? You and DORK will get along great!!!!!!!!!

I was just in Wilson for work last fall. I'd think Rocky Mount might be as close if not slightly closer to some of the good VA terrain, like the Pedlar District south of Shenandoah NP. Mapquest says 4 hr 16 min from Rocky Mt to Montebello, VA.

GNM..

That is the easy way to do it.. You have to start at RT56 hike North on the AT and then South on the MarHar trail...

Then hike South Up to the Priest for an even better work out....

Ok, here is another one. I have some really crappy hiking boots. I need to get me another pair before I start up this spring. I like the med height for ankle support. Any good suggestions? I ask so I dont end up buying another pair that arent worth anything. The last ones ended up being painful to walk in.

If you buy from ebay, I would go to a few outfitters first and try on different brands and note how they fit, because all brands and sizes are different. I usually wear a 10.5, but sometimes I have to wear 11 or a 10.5 wide.

Nakedape is my good friend but this is one thing that I strongly disagree with him on! I'm a Cheap A$$ on all kinds of stuff but I've learned that when it comes to boots ya gotta have them on your feet before making a decision. Go to REI and have someone that knows what they are doing help you find a good pair of boots. Don't buy them on Ebay!!!
