Grandfather Mountain

“Started up mountain at 9:30 pm last night, made ridge line at 11:30 pm. Profile and Shanty Spring trails getting icy. Hiking on ice used to not bother me much until I broke my leg on ice hiking alone last year. I try to be more careful, I'm getting to old and tired of breaking things. I think we overheard the folks at Linville Gorge last nite. Good sleep, woke at 8:00 am to a temp of 0 in the tent. Walked over to Calloway overlook. Conditions at summit slightly better than last year (temp 10, WC -18), temp about 8, windchill -15 and sunny.Beautiful views!! Took many pics. Back 2 car by 11:30 this am. Stopped at Footsloggers in Boone, many items 50% off,got a nice Mtn Hardware jacket. Damn near fell asleep on drive home, had 2 find money then coffee in Wilkesboro (no easy task). To AT and Big Bald in 2 weeks! Hope all having/had a great weekend!

“Were you able to get a permit? The last time I went there to hike they would not issue me a permit because they said the weather was too bad. The temp was something like -5. I was pi$$ed!”

“I forgot (wink). usually get one but we started late (9:30 pm). If they told me the weather was bad I'd say ok, and go anyway.
