Westboro Baptist Church is coming to my town!

“I'm sure y'all know about this depraved cult - the one that pickets funerals of dead soldiers and veterans and displays and upside down american flag as its web logo.

I found out they are coming to the public high school in my town next month. They focus is the fact that there is a gay-straight alliance type group in the High School. It might be best to ignore them, but if they are going to be jeering and harassing teenagers - I think it might be good to have some adults there to take the side of the kids.

“I had the "opportunity" to meet a few of the members of that church at the funeral for a young soldier named Matt Weber. I couldnt here much of what they said though. There were over 450 of us there who pretty much drowned them out so the family couldnt hear them at any point. We also lined up 16 school buses to block their ability to be seen. To block the driveway (so they couldnt be seen) we formed a human wall. Our one rule was that we would not look at them or speak to them in anyway. They only saw our backs.

Thank God for the PGR.

Had it been any situation besides a funeral I would not have gone. I would want to do anything to bring attention to their cause.

“If I might give a little advice, do not try to confront these people with verbal argument. Their reaction, much like some of the people who post on this site, is to continue to shout you down. I have observed them shouting for hours. They will do almost anything to offend any passersby. Since they live close to my hometown, they love to come and "protest" during college graduation because the university allows gay people to attend. My wife and I, (she says hello), were on our way to graduation two years ago and thoroughly planning on ignoring the Westboro folks. Well, one of the women in the protest group was walking all over the United States flag, which offended us. My wife assumed that the woman didn't realize what she was doing and mentioned to the woman, "hey, you're stepping on the flag". The woman's response??? "NO YOU ARE STEPPING ON THE FLAG BECAUSE YOU SUPPORT FAGGOTS!" Just looking into that hate-filled, spit-spewing, reddened face was revolting.
By the way, most of the adults are licensed lawyers, who would love for you to attempt to take action against them.

As with the soldier's funerals, the idea for me is supporting the people who are being harassed - not to go out and oppose the WBC.

As for the guard, all kinds of folks ride motor cycles. I've been on a motorcycle about 3 times and probably won't do it again. I don't see how you can claim backpacking is a better hobby that motor cycle riding in any objective sense. And from an ecological point of view its better than driving a car.”

Whether its legally arson would depend on the statute, if its unlawful intentional damage by fire then getting the required permits would be the issue. Given the danger to firefighters, I think its reasonable to call it arson if there aren't proper permits and notification.”
