looking for Kayaks
I want to get my kids and myself into Kayaking. I am looking for two maybe three recreational Kayaks. Anyone know of any? New ones cost about 400, so I am looking to spend about 200 each.

You'll be doing good to find new ones for $400. Be patient and look for paddling groups & kayak shops within a few hundred miles. This is gonna take some time.

I've said kayaking is the most bang-for-the-buck recreation I've done. You won't remember the initial expense a few months down the road.

I'm SOOOO glad you didn't say you were looking for a tandem. That's the biggest noobie mistake you can make.

if you do not mind used one, then look for a place that rents them during the summer. Most places will sell them at the end of the season pretty cheap (a tad banged up but they float)
plus your children will out grow a kayak faster then you think. up will want to up grade within a few years.

They are pretty big. Should be easy to find.
Did you check under the bed?

If anyone hears of anything, drop me a line. Dick's has one for under 300. I think it an Old Town. I missed all the end of season rental sales. I will keep looking. I am sure there are some Kayakers out there looking to upgrade this season.

bigp, you're in Ohio, Craigslist in Columbus and Cincy is very active. Keep an eye on the listings there, good deals pop up all the time and the best thing...no shipping!

If you're looking to spend a couple hundred each, the best you'll find (new) is something more designed for water play than touring or day tripping. The Pelicans are close to that price but they're not worth the few hundred bucks---unless you're just looking for something to play around on a small lake during the summer. They don't track well but can be a lot of fun to goof off in. You should be able to fish out of it too. Plug: check your local Gander Mountain for a decent selection.

Since my girls are pretty young, I am not looking for much. There are two small rivers here in Cincy that very easy going but fun for kids. I feel it would be perfect for young kids just learning.

This is similar to what Abby has (a friend has loaned it to us indefinitely). The tri hull is great, very hard to tip but still easy to maneuver.

I did a google for sit on top tri hull and tons of pages came up.

I've got a couple of Otter Kayaks that I bought together from Gander Mountain several years back. I think I only paid $500 or so for both. They have been worth every penny for the satisfaction they provide. Its an excellent and quick way to get to some fine back country. I'm currently Jones-ing for a Sea Kayak!
