Extreme Winter Hammocking! 8:30:04 PM 3/05/09 “these guys are crackheads...jeezus, you can't be that chipper that cold, in a hammock. I don't believe it was that cold, cause not once did you hear someone say: "G-DAMN, IT'S F-ING -26, F THIS SH!!!!"” 10:54:55 PM 3/05/09 “Man they had the setups for it though didn't they!” 3:39:46 AM 3/06/09 “It was that cold. There's another guy you need to check out on youtube who goes by Turk. He lives in Canada and took his hammock up north of the 50* latitude. Oh yeah... cold weather in a hammock is a real treat. I've been down to 12* F BTW... Shug and kpapke cut their trip short by a day.” 5:23:47 AM 3/06/09 “Whooooo buddy!!!......they from the south??? I camped/canoed in 10 degrees...my orange juice froze around the rim of my glass...that was cold enough for me.... ...those guys are CRAZY!!!” 5:25:03 AM 3/06/09 “My first camping trip with Carolina Hikers it got down to 2 degrees or 0 degrees depending on whose thermometer you trusted. The first night we were in a campground and would put our water bottles in a cooler to keep them from freezing :). Any bottle left more than 10' from the fire froze solid. When I was watching that video above I was wondering how that guy stuffed all that stuff in his backpack. Then I read the side info and it said they hiked back to the car to get more equipment. last edited: 3/06/09 5:19:03 AM” 5:29:42 AM 3/06/09 “I love those chemical heating thingies....the body ones are GREAT!!!” 5:31:34 AM 3/06/09 “Shug will also pull a pulk and can carry a lot of his winter gear on that. He has some pulk vids up on youtube. I built a pulk toward the end of the winter but never got a chance to pull it.” 5:38:14 AM 3/06/09 “whats a pulk??? (hey...I live in the south)” 5:39:46 AM 3/06/09 “I love those chemical heating thingies....the body ones are GREAT!!! divinity 5:31:34 AM 3/06/09 yah, especially when they're female.” 5:40:25 AM 3/06/09 5:40:39 AM 3/06/09 “I have no doubt they did it, but did it "happily", no way.” 5:41:35 AM 3/06/09 “wow...I wondered why the one guy had no backpack on.... ...Hi Bit...good to see ya!!! ...body warmers...don't know if I would want a woman!!! :0 ...I had one in my boots with my water bottle to keep it from freezing..one in the foot of my sleeping bag...one in each pocket...and my a$$ got cold so I shoved one down the back of my pants :)” 5:47:10 AM 3/06/09 “frig and jack straw pulled pulk sleds across bare ground on our Grayson Highlands trip a few weeks ago. they be real men” 6:36:31 AM 3/06/09 “(Dumb question...) ...is it harder to pull them on bare ground?” 6:37:49 AM 3/06/09 “depends on the relative load.... hehehe all other being equal... yes bare ground is harder” 6:39:25 AM 3/06/09 “...lol..like people hitching a ride?” 6:43:03 AM 3/06/09 “they're nuts! I'm not sure I'll be warm in my hammock in 60 degree weather.....lol” 6:53:00 AM 3/06/09 “..but did ya hear all the pads & 2 sleeping bags???” 6:54:41 AM 3/06/09 “I couldn't carry it all....tooo much weight.” 6:57:18 AM 3/06/09 “That's why ya have a PULK!!!!” 6:59:04 AM 3/06/09 “dang div - I think you got it” 7:03:29 AM 3/06/09 “Hey there Hoi...how is retirement???...ya coming to Sipsey???” 7:09:48 AM 3/06/09 “retirement starts in 6 days and a wakeup I probably won't be down for the Sipsey trip cause I'm getting ready for the AT - I would like to thru hike it starting 4 April from Springer - there is a bunch of stuff to do before then however” 7:27:09 AM 3/06/09 “I see a market for minus 20*F hammocks when oil co's run out of tankers to store oil.” 7:30:25 AM 3/06/09 Silly Cousins to the South “Winter campning is fun and easy. Search the FYAO IV thread and check out the smiles. Seriously, nothing feels better than waking up warm in the snow. An outdoor sleep in winter is the best sleep you can get. One of my best memories is waking up in the middle of the night just below treeline on Marcy. It was a full moon and the moon was behind us. It had snowed most of the night and when I stuck my head out of my bivy sack the moonglow illuminated the new snow on the stunted spruce trees before me. I said, 'John, wake up, you have to see this.' Magic!” 8:44:36 AM 3/06/09 “Well at the last Linville Gorge trip I slept in my hammock with a pad and 0 degree bag and it got down to -3 and I was fine! I did however do the hot water bottle though!! Wassup Gremlin???” 9:00:14 AM 3/06/09 “recently, i did my coldest campout ever.. -15F.. i slept on my cot. surplus down bag and my summer lafuma plus a couple of fleece (100 and 300) and it was toasty. :D the one thing they didn't have with makes life way easier first thing in the morning in this kind of super cold is a vacuum glass thermos with a real cork stopper. you fill it up with boiling water just before hitting the sack.. it will be hot (especially if you sleep with it in your bags/s along with all the other things) in the morning to make quick food/drink.” 9:50:15 AM 3/06/09 “silly ground sleepers i sleep WARMER in my hammock setup than i ever slept on the ground. having a good underquilt and a cover for the the mesh (so it works like a 4 season tent with a chimney) is key. personal preference aside... there is NO REASON to sleep cold in a hammock.” 10:59:44 AM 3/06/09 “I am currently playing around with the Super Shelter for my HH. Kurt was using a Super Shelter augmented with some other insulation when they were out in the -26* weather. It'll be some time before I try that kind of weather tho.” 11:10:14 AM 3/06/09 “I just got back from Ed Speers place and got a tour of his facility and left with the best hammock tarp on the market! The Speer Winter tarp!” 4:53:49 PM 3/06/09 “The Speer winter tarp is good. But there are some others definitely giving it a run for it's money. The Warbonnet Super Fly is a really super piece of kit. I almost like it better from what I have seen. Although I haven't played with either one. I did make a DIY mod of the Hennessey Hex tarp to make a winter tarp of my own. The JRB hammock hut takes the winter tarp to an extra level. Full enclosure. last edited: 3/06/09 5:03:53 PM” 5:13:16 PM 3/06/09 “Dang Rev....let me have my moment!!!! I don't buy new gear very often and I usually use my gear until it ain't good fer nutton anymore!!!” 6:12:37 PM 3/06/09 “hehehe.... the SWT is an excellent piece. Just not sure it qualifies as "the best" any more. It may have to share the title.” 8:37:19 PM 3/06/09
