“It was that cold. There's another guy you need to check out on youtube who goes by Turk. He lives in Canada and took his hammock up north of the 50* latitude. Oh yeah... cold weather in a hammock is a real treat. I've been down to 12* F

“My first camping trip with Carolina Hikers it got down to 2 degrees or 0 degrees depending on whose thermometer you trusted. The first night we were in a campground and would put our water bottles in a cooler to keep them from freezing :). Any bottle left more than 10' from the fire froze solid.

When I was watching that video above I was wondering how that guy stuffed all that stuff in his backpack. Then I read the side info and it said they hiked back to the car to get more equipment.

Seriously, nothing feels better than waking up warm in the snow. An outdoor sleep in winter is the best sleep you can get.

One of my best memories is waking up in the middle of the night just below treeline on Marcy. It was a full moon and the moon was behind us. It had snowed most of the night and when I stuck my head out of my bivy sack the moonglow illuminated the new snow on the stunted spruce trees before me. I said, 'John, wake up, you have to see this.'

“Well at the last Linville Gorge trip I slept in my hammock with a pad and 0 degree bag and it got down to -3 and I was fine! I did however do the hot water bottle though!!

“recently, i did my coldest campout ever.. -15F.. i slept on my cot. surplus down bag and my summer lafuma plus a couple of fleece (100 and 300) and it was toasty. :D

the one thing they didn't have with makes life way easier first thing in the morning in this kind of super cold is a vacuum glass thermos with a real cork stopper. you fill it up with boiling water just before hitting the sack.. it will be hot (especially if you sleep with it in your bags/s along with all the other things) in the morning to make quick food/drink.”

i sleep WARMER in my hammock setup than i ever slept on the ground. having a good underquilt and a cover for the the mesh (so it works like a 4 season tent with a chimney) is key.

personal preference aside... there is NO REASON to sleep cold in a hammock.”

“I am currently playing around with the Super Shelter for my HH. Kurt was using a Super Shelter augmented with some other insulation when they were out in the -26* weather. It'll be some time before I try that kind of weather tho.”

“The Speer winter tarp is good. But there are some others definitely giving it a run for it's money. The Warbonnet Super Fly is a really super piece of kit. I almost like it better from what I have seen. Although I haven't played with either one. I did make a DIY mod of the Hennessey Hex tarp to make a winter tarp of my own.

The JRB hammock hut takes the winter tarp to an extra level. Full enclosure.
