I love the alpine lakes up there. I'll have to keep this under consideration.

I take a CART(?) shuttle from ID Falls to Challis when I fly there. The cost is minimal. I bet you could find something similar.

what is your route in the Sawtooths? I am planning a scout trip there in August. Mine is Lake Petit to Sawtooth Lake, and out to Iron Creek Campground. We'll see almost all the high lake basins.

I'll keep track of the dates, and see what works out. I'm going on a week long hike at spring break, and a week long one in August in the Sawtooths, but maybe I could do a weekender and hike in with your party a ways. Not enough days available for the good stuff!

You must be referring to other Sawtooths (there is more than one sawtooth range).

BTW -
El Capitan looks awesome from Lake Alice - the El Capitan of the Idaho Sawtooths, that is ;)

If all goes swimmingly, I will be a resident of Challis by hike time. I am working on letters of interest to a number of local employers.

This sounds like the right move for you, gojo. You are definitely an Idaho guy. my impression is that there would more jobs in other places in Idaho, but if you really like Challis, go for it.

I got an email from The Friendly Ranger last week. She said Stanley has two feet of snow on the ground. It must be yards deep at elevation - pack snow shoes :)
gojo

All that snow will go fast in Stanley, and will be gone from the trails by mid July. I have an 8 day backpack planned in the Sawtooths in late August. We will hike from Petit Lake to Sawtooth Lake, and exit via Iron Creek Campground.
