Americans United Denounces Arizona Preacher’s Death Prayers Against Obama
AU’s Barry Lynn – Who Has Also Been the Target of Death Prayers – Calls on Religious Right Leaders to Repudiate Violent Rhetoric

WASHINGTON - September 2 - Americans United for Separation of Church and State today denounced the violent rhetoric of an Arizona preacher who is praying for the death of President Barack Obama and called on Religious Right leaders to repudiate such extremism.

The Rev. Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church told his Tempe, Ariz., congregation he prays that Obama "dies and goes to hell." In an Aug. 16 sermon that recently came to public attention, Anderson said, "If you want to know how I'd like to see Obama die, I'd like him to die of natural causes. I don't want him to be a martyr, we don't need another holiday. I'd like to see him die, like Ted Kennedy, of brain cancer."

Anderson's sermon took place just before an Obama visit to Arizona, and a member of the congregation showed up outside the Obama event in Phoenix carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle.

"This has gone much too far," said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, Americans United executive director. "When preachers call for the death of the president or others that they disagree with, it provides a justification for acts of intimidation and violence. It's grossly irresponsible, and the American people ought to rise up and say ‘enough is enough.'"

Lynn said Religious Right leaders have a special responsibility to repudiate such rhetoric.

"National Religious Right leaders have been feeding their flock a steady diet of shrill and provocative language," said Lynn. "It should come as no surprise when Anderson and those like him escalate the animosity."

Lynn noted that "imprecatory prayers" (prayers that ask God to kill or otherwise harm others) have become all too common in recent years.

* The Rev. Wiley Drake, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, Calif., announced in June of this year that he is praying for Obama's death. Drake, former second vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, has also called for imprecatory prayers against AU's Lynn and other staff members of Lynn's organization.

* The Rev. Gordon Klingenschmitt, head of Pray In Jesus' Name Ministries and a former Navy chaplain, has also sought prayers for the death of Lynn and others who challenged Klingenschmitt's Religious Right activities.

* Randall Terry, Operation Rescue founder and head of the Society for Truth and Justice, held a June 1 news conference at the National Press Club to say he is glad that Nebraska physician Dr. George Tiller is dead. Terry said the doctor, whose clinic provided abortions for women with problem pregnancies, was a "mass murderer" who "reaped what he sowed." Tiller was murdered while serving as an usher at his church.

* TV preacher and Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson as recently as 2003 urged his followers to pray that God would remove three Supreme Court justices so that President George W. Bush could replace them with nominees that support Religious Right positions against reproductive choice, gay rights and church-state separation. In 2001 Robertson joined the late Jerry Falwell in blaming the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Supreme Court, gays, feminists and civil liberties groups. Said AU's Lynn, "Religious Right leaders have every right to make the case for their views on public issues, but when they inflame opinion with outrageous statements, they are going too far.

"This must stop," said Lynn, "before more tragedies occur."

If the kiddies actually see Obama they might realise that he’s not a three-headed monster and all that hard work will be for naught.

All the crap and growling and flying spittle poured into their impressionable minds…… all for naught.

Politico Gets It Way Wrong On Conservatives' Complaints About FCC Diversity Czar Lloyd
Photo of Seton Motley.
By Seton Motley
September 7, 2009 - 14:22 ET

Van Jones and Mark Lloyd:
Hopefully Headed in the Same Direction

Editor's Note: In Sunday's More czars on conservative hit list, the Politico's Lisa Lerer stated "conservatives have accused (Mark) Lloyd, appointed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as the agency’s Chief Diversity officer in late July, of secretly wanting to reinstate the controversial Fairness Doctrine." Below is my full response to her and them, excerpts of which I posted in their Comments section and sent via their email form directly to her.

This is not at all accurate. We at the Media Research Center broke the news of Lloyd’s FCC gig (created just for him just the way the “green jobs czar” slot was for the recently dispatched conspiracy-addled Truther-Communist Van Jones). And we specifically stated that he had "no need for the mis-named 'Fairness' Doctrine." From that essay:

These last two (Lloyd report recommendations) get perilously close to the use of "localism" to silence conservative (and Christian) radio stations, about which we have been warning for quite some time.

...In a follow-up essay to the CAP report entitled "Forget the Fairness Doctrine," Lloyd specifically instructs liberal activists to do the latter - use the "localism" requirement to harass conservative stations by filing complaints with the FCC. The FCC would then assess these stations fines, with the money going to (very liberal) public broadcasting.

Or worse - the FCC would rescind these stations' broadcast licenses. In other words, shut them up by shutting them down. Thus, as Lloyd says, no need for the mis-named "Fairness" Doctrine.

We have repeatedly said the same on TV, radio and in print, in fact since long before Lloyd got his new job. The Left’s plans to travel these "localism" and "diversity" alternate routes to arrive at the same censorship destination as the mis-named “Fairness” Doctrine - the silencing of conservative and Christian talk radio – long predate Lloyd’s appointment.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓

And to the best of my knowledge (and we follow this issue very closely), the many conservatives expressing their concerns about Lloyd have done so on grounds identical to ours. I haven't seen any major conservative in any forum say Lloyd wants to reinstate the Doctrine.

We would very much love for you to provide examples of conservatives getting Lloyd's views wrong. In fact, the only citation you make is of Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa:

“Mr. Lloyd supports a backdoor method of furthering the goals of the Fairness Doctrine by other means.”

And he gets it exactly right.

If we missed examples of the conservative inaccuracies you reference we will gladly stand corrected. Otherwise, you should issue a correction.

You should then thoroughly examine Lloyd’s incredibly troubling views on the First Amendment and the media, not to mention his disturbing admiration for Venezuelan Communist dictator Hugo Chavez.

Lloyd has written extensively about his great disdain for conservative talk radio - and his plans to so exorbitantly fine and incessantly regulate the stations that broadcast it that it becomes impossible for them to remain in business.

Lloyd’s views on the First Amendment are cause for even greater alarm:

“It should be clear by now that my focus here is not freedom of speech or the press. This freedom is all too often an exaggeration. At the very least, blind references to freedom of speech or the press serve as a distraction from the critical examination of other communications policies.”

Lloyd is now at the FCC, where he can begin his “critical examination of other communications policies” that he views to be worthy of increased emphasis to the detriment of the “exaggerat(ed)…distraction” that is freedom of speech and the press.

And as a kicker, Lloyd has on video expressed his high regard for Chavez's "incredible...democratic revolution." And how after Chavez had solidified his choke hold on Venezuela he "began to take very seriously the media in his country." Which Chavez has done by revoking the licenses of or simply seizing and nationalizing radio and television stations and publications critical of him.

As a journalist, you should find Lloyd’s veneration of Chavez’s actions to be as disconcerting as we do.

Lloyd has an extensive anti-free speech record. Given his particular contempt for the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck et.al., he should not be in a position that places their broadcast lives in his hands.

Thankfully, the word on Lloyd is getting out, no thanks to reports like yours. You simply summarily dismiss concerns about Lloyd's intentions for talk radio by knocking down a factually inaccurate straw man of your own making.

You owe it to your readers to paint Lloyd’s full, accurate picture. If you do, I think you will come to see why many, many Americans - not just conservatives – are concerned about Lloyd’s getting this gig, tailor-made just for him.

When you do, you will likely come to the same conclusion that many Americans across the land – not just conservatives – have: that Mark Lloyd should follow Van Jones out the door.

I have no comment on the right or wrong of government actions, but if you think the laws of this land aren't enforced "at the point of a gun" you are pretty naive. How do you think laws get enforced once they are broken. Don't pay your taxes? The State will come for their money, eventually with armed enforcement officers if needed. Threaten the president? Its not the white house clerical staff they send to investigate.

Ask Dillinger, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, Randy Weaver, or the Branch Dravidians if they think "at the point of a gun" is a laughable matter.

salebored? Who physically evicts you from a house that has been foreclosed? A banker with a clipboard or a sheriff with a gun?

Who bashes down the door and raids the local meth lab? Are sheriff's with guns just window dressing when they stand watch in our courtrooms? When they come to take custody of an abused child, is it a frail 60 yo female counselor at the door, or do the burly guys wearing guns clear the way first? When your car is jacked, do they just send the tow truck operator to get it back, or do the men with guns go in first? And if I refuse to pay my property tax, who do you think they will send to do something about it?

The laws of this land are balanced "at the point of a gun". Without the gun, you may have laws, but you won't have order.
