Ginny - I don't know what happened to Clyde - he said he would be coming in from Hiker Hostel but when the shuttle from Hiker Hostel came there was no Clyde so I left on my own. I suspect some personal issues (MIL health) may have delayed his hike.

I'm here at Fontana Village trying to figure out how to do the Smokies without staying in a shelter - looking at doing the BMT mostly.

HOI you can camp at the shelters, if they are "full" I'm sure you won't get bothered. From Trekingirls post, she tented at most of them, and hell, your not impacted the ground with your shelter...lol

GO HOI!!!!!!!!

Good luck friend.

Well I'm about 2/3 done with the BMT in the Smokies - currently here in Cherokee trying to dry every thing out - the last week was rain rain and more rain - taking a zero then starting Sat. for 5 more days (4 nights) left to the BMT in the Smokies.

Well Baume - I doubt I will ever go to trail days but anyways the progress report is that I am now in Erwin taking a zero and hoping my foot heals enough to head out Friday so I will have a good day Saturday up on Beauty Spot. The last few days of hiking with wet feet have done a job on my right foot - painful enough that I am posting at this hour instead of sleeping

Hog, so how far have you gone thus far?

Here's hoping that foot heals up quickly!

HOI Use duct tape. On a trip west I developed a large blister in the center of my forefoot. Wrapping with duct tape totally eliminated the friction. It protected the wound and I hiked pain free for the rest of the trip.

rm - hike is going well - my conditioning continues to improve and I am still seeing wild flowers I have never seen before - as to completing the trail this year - I suspect I am hiking a long section and not a thru hike but I'm OK with that - the conditioning and the wild flowers are more important to me

I hope your foot heals soon HOI. I know you have been wanting to do this hike for a long time. Have an amazing journey HOI!

If I ever get to where I can backpack again, I think I'll just take a few days to hike on the AT and see how long the 'section' becomes.
