Anybody used this filter bottle?

Anybody here has any experience with Katadyn water filter bottle?

I may need a water filter/purifying system that is quick and easy to use. Not for backcountry use intended though.

I like Aqua Mira for the ease of use and because it works real fast. Micropur is good too, but it takes longer and its clorine taste...ugh.
This time though I would prefer not to rely on chemical water treatment. A filter would be too clumsy as an equipment to take along and much too conspicuous.

How does this bottle work? Is it as quick and eays to handle as it looks? Seems simple and foolproof.

Any other practical options?

I used to have one of the older bottles (can't remember the brand) and I didn't like it. The water barely came out and you had to squeeze it with everything you had.
However, this bottle looks like a big improvement from the older ones, but I wonder how often you have to change the filter. If the price is right I would give it a try.

100 liters capacity per filter.
Price: 79CHF ;-)

Yeah, I was wondering if it is heard to squeez. It may be easier for a guy with big, strong hands, but I certainly don't want to have to jump around on it with all my weight to get water.

I had one, tried to use when we were traveling in Mexico. Had a brand new element, and it would have taken an elephant standing on it to get any water out of it. Pass on this trash!!

79 Swiss Francs. No idea how much it costs in the US, but propably a bit cheaper than in Switzerland.

No, I am not an elephant, but than, I don't need as much water ;-)

Usually that's what they put into Swiss bank accounts.

It looks interesting. I use the First Need because it kills viruses and some people have complained it is hard to pump, but I've never had a problem. Is it worth 79CHF to try it out? Please keep us posted.

I have the bigger bottle and it's not really that tough to use. Perfect for the right situation, just don't plan on getting huge volumes of water in a hurry.

What Nonconformist said. True about volume of water. I use mine when on the go passing streams or run off's with no worry about quality of my thirst. If anyone wanting to purchase this system, Jerbear has a deal and some....

Thanks Jerbear, for the offer :-)

As I said, it's not intended for backcountry use, rather for dodgy hotels and hostles in a country with uncertain drinking water standards. Also not for large quantity of water. I think I will go to a shop and have a look at it. If it would be really hard to squeeze that would be a bummer.

I looked it up in Cabela's. In the US the purifier is brown; the blue bottle is only a microfilter. I would only use a purifier that de-activates viruses in a 3rd world country - even with Hep A and B inocculation.

It's called the Exstream and both the 26 oz. (ml?) and 34 oz. versions are US44,99$.

Are you guys sure you have the purifier?

Yesterday I bought the Katadyn Bottle. It's a purifier, by the way. Sadly the thing was leaking from underneath the cap, when I squeezed it. The water came along through the screw thread and it just wasn't two or three drops, but rather a steady little stream, almost as much as came out through the bite valve itself.
I took it to the office today and showed it a colleague, to let him check it out. He investigetad the issue thouroughly and determined that this can't be right.
So, today after work, I went back to he shop. The guy screwed the top on real hard and voila, no leakage. Problem was I could hardly unscrew it, much less could I screw on the top so hard that it wouldn't leak anymore. The guy got another bottle. Same problem - if he screwed it with his manly hands, no leakage. If I screwed it with my lady hands and squeezed it, it sputtered and squirted from underneath the cap. Not very practical.
I got the money back.

Anybody ever experienced the same problem with the Katadyn Bottle? That the cap needs to screwed on very hard to keep it from leaking?

...mmm, Steripen. I have been looking at it very briefly, but dismissed it because it is hard to imagine that something so simple as light, even UV light, should be able to savely eliminate bacteria and viruses?

Any experience with it?

UV works. The only reason cities don't use it is from contamination in pipes - chlorine works for that.

I went back to the store and showed them the problem with the water leaking from underneath the cap. The guy at the shop screwed on the top so hard that it wouldn't leak anymore, but I was hardly able to unsrew the cap and much less could I screw it on so hard that it wouldn't leak anymore. We tryed another bottle, same problem - when he put on the cap it wouldn't leak, but when I put on the cap it would leak. Katadyn constructs a filter bottle that can only be handled by strong male hands? ...mmmmm? Well, I decided to get a refund rather than bothering with a leaking bottle.
A few days later I went into a different store, to look at the steripen as a possible alternativ. There they had the larger Katadyn Filter Bottle. In the end I left the shop with the Katadyn Bottle. At home I tryed it with tap water. Filled it with water, screwed on the cap, just like I would on any other bottle, container or thermos and...no water leaking. Well, that's how it should be.
Now let's see how the bottle will perform in field.
