okay, I really really really really really don't want this to go all fuego... I think I'm done playing flame battle for awhile...

also god dammit I know I spelled "seceding" wrong in the topic... my brain's fried today

anyways, so I know there was just a very subtle quip from Texas' governor and nothing else, but I got to thinking what if Texas really seceded?

I would argue that, if such a thing were to happen, one positive that could possibly come out of it would be both political systems (of the newly formed nation of Texas, as well as the remainder of America) might begin to work a little more smoothly. As it is (as all side surely must agree), so much of our government (much like TT) is tied down in partisan bickering. If suddenly Texas were to become a nation, I bet a lot of the politicians on the right might expatriate, so to speak, to join this new nation.

What you might ultimately have as a result would be that Texas would have a government almost completely made up of conservatives, who could probably pass bills and make things happen a lot more smoothly than the bipartisan government of the "old" America did (even when the conservatives had essential control of everything, bipartisan fighting bogged every process down). Similarly, the "new" American government, made up of the remaining liberals and likely smallish amount of conservatives who stayed behind, would likely also run a lot more smoothly.

Of course, a state literally seceding from America would cause huge negative repercussions in just about every aspect... but I'd argue that an ultimately smoother political system might be a silver lining

Best thing to do would be let them go, recognize them as a state, and then attack them because they'd never expect it.

It might spell the end for the Gay Communist Gun Party, though (permanent schism).

Chuck Norris said he'd run for president of Texas if they did....

Texas is the only state that can legally leave the union. It's something they "negotiated" way back when.

That would suck! Then TX and OK would no longer share the longest state line. Who would then rise to that status? CA and NV?! Oh the humanity!

A popular urban legend has grown stating that Texas has a special right to secede from The Union. A thorough reading of all documents for annexation shows that no provision is made for Texas to secede from the United States. [6] Texas has the same rights granted to it as any other state, but also the right to form from its territory 4 states in addition to "Texas", essentially creating 5 states. [7] Furthermore, in its 1868 decision in Texas v. White, the United States Supreme Court ruled that secession of Texas from the United States was illegal. The court wrote, "The Constitution, in all its provisions, looks to an indestructible Union, composed of indestructible States."

Found on eBay:
The great state of Texas is for sale. All proceeds will go towards paying off the national debt of the United States of America. Must sell before she secedes! You’ll receive the whole state including all sports teams. Historic sites include the Alamo, Lyndon Johnson’s boyhood home, Bishop’s Palace, and so many more. Think of the income opportunities. The state is also plentiful in both hunting and fishing sites. As an added benefit you can make all your friends real, Texas Rangers. How about that!:

I think it would be a worthwhile experiment. The feds need to remember from whence their power is derived.

If California did that it would prolly benefit the country more and I'd prolly have to defect.

This is how you figure which states stay and which states go. taxfoundation.org/research/show/266.html

A seventeen state union sounds good, but that list didn't have Israel, afganistranded, Iraq and all the other blood suckers that should be given back to Cuba.

Just imagine all the crap we could've avoided if they'd seceded ten or more years ago.   Anybody think Bush could've been elected from Kennebunkport?

Commie baseballs. Amazing.
