boots
I am looking for a pair of hiking boots of reasonable cost that are leather, brown, or cordovan. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am graduating college and dont have a big budget and a good sale item would be great.

Before I do that, seeing as how your a fisheries and wildlife major, I want to know your opinion of shooting deer out of season and shooting wolves any old time.

Check out the Hi-Tec Altitudes. They are cheap and surprisingly comfortable and durable. I see them at most outfitters for about 80.00, but I have bought them from some of the discount shoe stores for under 60.00.

I agree with mildbill. I wore Hi-Tec on the AT and they were most comfortable, relatively inexpensive and sticky like glue on rocks.

Your best bet is to go to an outfitter and have them measure your feet and try on a few pairs to see which seem to fit the best. It doesn't matter that they are a good deal if they don't fit correctly.

I've also worn trail runners and enjoyed them. I wore so damn many different shoes/boots on the AT that at times I wore a boot on one foot, a trail runner on another and the third was barefoot. All of my feet were comfortable.

I have been thinking about the Hi-Tecs because of the price. I have a nice pair of Asolos but I have to get some boots that meet work requirements.

REI has Hi-tecs on sale for around $40. If you don't like 'em, it's mildbills fault.

You have to try them on until you find what fits your feet best. For me Merrill's fit the best. I don't even have to break them in. Also, Merrill's are less expensive than comparable boots of other brands. My son likes the Merrill fit also, but he did have one pair blow out on him once. I've had good quality experiences.

What boots hike a big toe box? I know keens do. Are there other brands where the toebox is generally more accomodating?

I once found Asolo's to have a very narrow toebox, try something from Merrell or Vasque.

Or check out a pair of trail runners.

I am on my third pair of Vasque Rangers. This last pair is slightly smaller in the toe box. Up until they changed the design, I thought they were had as much room around the toes as any boots out there.

The new pair isn't bad, but definately not as roomy as they used to be.

I'm thinking of checking out La Sportivas. Anyone got an opinion.

Done Vasques, Merrells -- to narrow for one foot (fallen arch).

I'm with Roam. Asolos are too narrow for me. I bought a pair of Keens that were awesome out of the box. Quite roomy.

I have wide feet and my LL Bean cresta hikers fit great right out of the box.

La Sportiva certainly has a good reputation for hard core mountaineering boots. I would guess that the workmanship carries over to their lighter duty hikers as well.

asolo FSN 95 124 sierra trading post. if you look online u can find a cuppon code, http://www.retailmenot.com/view/sierratradingpost.com

that worked for me i ended up getting a 20% discount at the time that negated the express shipping i needed because my pair of 30 day old timberland fell apart on me in the middle of summer camp. (im a scout camp councilor hike 11 miles a day with a day pack every day for 2 months)

Good to know. Yeah, it was almost all mountaineering boots in the Zappos selection but I thought these looked comfortable with a bigger than average toebox. I was trying to avoid GTX but that is really hard to do these days. At least these have a lot of material.

Tried Asolos as well. I really like them, but they are too narrow.

they make asolo boots in a variety of widths. did you look at the wider boots? the asolo boots are awesome. way better than the vasque boots they replaced. i returned my vasque boots (red wing shoe company) through the warranty and got a new pair which i promptly returned to REI. i felt bad about returning a used pair of boots to REI since they would just put them in the garage sale. this way they got a new pair of boots and red wing ate it on the warranty. what was wrong: the rubber on the sole started to separate from the rubber. the guy at REI told me they get lots of them back for this very reason.

i now hike in my old running shoes. cheap. huge supply. way lighter than any boot. very broken in from running. very comfy even for long days.

I've just never hiked any long distance in a running shoe, though I'd like to try. I do use running shoes for day hikes, but even on those, I've noticed the soles of y feet are a little tender afterwards from all of the rock poking up through the sole. On top of it all, the granite out here tends to eat mesh up in a hurry.

Jeeze. I really wanted to love those La Sportivas, but they were too tight, even with Superfeet to support my fallen arch (probably need fitted orthotics...someday...).

I ended up going with the Keen Voyageur Mid. No WB. Decent vents on the side. Should stay pretty cool in them and be good summer/fall hiking boots. Really comfortable. Read that the sole life isn't too long (why in the hell didn't Keen go with a Vibram sole???). We'll see....

Check out Zamberlains. Tater got a pair and I stuck my feet in them (my feet hate ALL shoes)....but these particular boots were heavenly....except they were like a mans shoe and sized about a size and a half too big. LOL.

Ok, so I've been DEALING with hiking boots that are too narrow. (EE)

I wear 5e (wide x 5), and it is VERY difficult to find a pair of boots that fit.

So anyways, two places I recommend for you peeps that have trouble finding boots:

zappos.com
endless.com

I prefer zappos because I like the company, but endless has a slightly better webpage and similar "guarantees". Also, they sometimes have stuff in stock that zappos does not.

Just an fyi.

I usually try on various brands of boots before buying, but Merrills fit me best with my wife foot. The have some models with fairly wide sizes.
