Mokowanis Junction
Question for anyone familiar with GNP..

Let's just suppose that I just got an email with my permit itinerary on it... and further more, let's suppose that I ddin't get exactly what I wanted...

Now suppose that my itinerary has me camping the first night at the Mokowanis Juntion (MOJ) campground. What would be the best trail to hike into MOJ, taking everything into consideration..

Thanks in advance..

question in your thread title? unnecessary punctuation?

Actually no.. If you read it out, it says "Glacier National Park Question".. I was just too lazy to type 'question' so I typed '?'. Of course now I've wasted the energy I saved by typing '?' instead of 'question' by responding to your drivel.

Why do I even bother?

Oh I don't mind him.. I'm just pissed that I opened up the thread hoping to find an answer to my question, and instead I encountered his diatribe...

he doesn't really show it, but he's only 15 yards from the colorado river there.

From the map on the Glacier website http://www.nps.gov/archive/glac/whatsnew/bcres/bcmap.htm
it looks like MOJ is next to Standing Indian Pass. You would either come in from Chief Mountain or Waterton. Is that what you asked for? If not, give them a call and explain that that wasn't on your route. They are usually quite willing to work with you.

Thanks Ginny,
I've been looking at my maps for a couple hours.. Here's the problem..

My campsites are:
MOJ
KOO
FRA
BOU
KIN

The last part of the trip is awesome, I just can't figure out the easiest way to get to MOJ... It seems like they should have given me a campground before it somewhere...

The first day may turn out to be one helluva hike...

If I start from Chief Mountain the shuttle at the end is going to be a bear..

so, if you think youre saving time and energy by typing "?" instead of "question", why do you waste the time to hit 5 keystrokes to type "'32oz" at then end of every post?

Man, I see what you mean - you've got a big first day.

By the way - I got to stay at Lake Francis a few summers back - one of my alltime favorite backcountry sites - pictures of it hang on my office wall. I dare ya to swim in that lake :)

Also, I'll be spending a couple of nights at Kintla in July.

That's a huge shuttle at the end...if you come out at Kintla and need to get back to Chief Mountain. Like 4-5 hours. Egads!

Will you have a car while you are here?

I was going to try to get a hold of you, but I wanted to be sure I knew what I was talking about..

Isn't there a trail head (fire road) off 17 at crusher hill south of Chief Mountain. I may see if I can get a camp gorund east of MOJ for the first night...

Do you know that area?

As for a car, I will have one (although I'm still trying to work out my itinerary for the few days between Mt Adams and the start of tis trip)...

How many miles is it to the campsite?

If you take the shuttle bus, it doesn't get to Chief Mountain until about 1:00, which really makes for a short day for hiking. If you are worried about it - if the mileage is more than 12 miles or so, I'd definitely give them a call.

As to the return. There isn't a lot of traffic on the Polebridge road, but there is some. I think most people would be willing to give you a ride down to West Glacier. From there you can catch a shuttle across the mountain to St. Marys - and from there hitch back to E. Glacier. Or leave your car in either West Glacier or St. Marys and catch shuttles from there to your starting point. A bit more complicated - but doable. (The east side shuttle does go thru St. Mary's - but it's still only once a day in each direction, I think.)

Screw the NPs. Dude - all those unregulated hike possibilities you'll drive past enroute to Glacier?

What? Big Horns? Wind Rivers? Beartooths? Black Hills?

Besides - they don't allow dogs...

I'm not very familiar with the East side of the park and trailheads there...I can check with my better half though.

BUT...what I was thinking, if you have a car, would be that we could maybe somehow get your car to Kintla while you are on the trail. Not sure about logistics of it all...just throwing an idea out there. :)

That would be awesome and appreciated.. I don't know why, but I was picturing you on the east side of the park...

They kind of blind sided me with this itinerary... I had asked them if I could get what I wanted to 'loop' me up kintla and back to bowman lake or some kinda loop utlizing many glacier and logan pass...

I can't somplain about the hike they gave me, as it is looking pretty awesome, but like you all have said, the first day and the shuttle may be a &^**^&^.

A point to point hike like that almost demands two cars - or a lot of flexibility on 'getting back' time and the patience to hitch.

We're in Kalispell - about 30 miles to the West of the park.

Once you are definitely set with your itinerary/dates, shoot me an email and we'll see if we can figure something out for you. (lilmountaingirl AT gmail.com) On the bright side ~ you'll get to see Logan Pass when you drive over it. :D lol

I am about 50 min east of the park in Cut Bank. If I don't have something going on when you come through I might be able to help (bsharman3463@yahoo.com).

How is the weather on the west side of the park? We have about 18 inches of new snow on the ground in Cut Bank and more coming.

32, they save several spots a night for walk-ins. They can be booked anywhere in the park. I suggest you camp by a ranger station and get there at 6am to get the itinerary you want as other people will be there that early.

Weather isn't too bad here...it's cold and they keep calling for snow but so far we've got nothing. We might take a drive to Lake McDonald on Sunday ~ haven't done that in months!

In regards to 32oz dilemma...if we are both available, maybe we can tag-team shuttle him if needed.

We went to Lake McDonald about a week ago and it was really nice and clear. They did have Two Med. and Many Glacier plowed for bikes and foot but I think this storm has changed that.

We go hit with more snow last night. The drifts are 4-5 feet deep.

Thank you so much for the offers!!!!!!!!! I am going to sit back and look at a bunch of options...

I am wondering if when I get there they would let me change the first two nights and keep the last 3.. that would be perfect, nd then I could start and fininsh on the western side of the park..

Again, thank you for the offers, I will see what I can work out.
