I grew up camping on this island. I never had a permit nor knew I needed one, meaybe we didn't back then. But now you do, there are 12 campsites scattered over the 900 acres. This island is 1/2 mile wide and 3 1/2 miles long. No roads except the 1/2 mile paved path from the ferry landing to the beach. I've camped here again a few years ago on a full moon night. It was glorious. Other than the single light a few hundred yards away where the ranger house is, the next set of lights were over 3 miles away on Emerald isle. very awesome. no vehicles on the island other than the ranger trucks.

Actually I did some research into it last year when I realized I was gonna get to go to tha beach and there is opportunity to do a kyaking overnighter on the islands around Nags Head....only problem is it appears to be more of a "group" thing and its costly :( bummer. lol”

“When I was still married and my father-in-law was still alive we'd camp on the Outer Banks (with the kids) after visiting him in Durham. Ocracoke and the islands have to be some of the most beautiful territory I've ever seen.”

“I have never really camped out on the beach. I have spent entire nights on the beach, but never with a tent. The closest I have ever come to camping at the beach was at the Carolina Beach Campground as a kid.”

“I've spent many nights on the beach waiting for a turtle nest to "boil", the term for when the babies hatch. The sand starts to turn over as they make it to the top and the sand looks like it's boiling. Gotta be there to help the little babies get to the ocean.

My dad made the comment that they have been getting to the ocean for millions of years without my help. Pfttttt. Well, they didn't have the obstacles they have now, like fishing nests and electricity. Don't get me started.

Billy, you live at the beach. I don't suppose camping on the beach is any big deal, but for the rest of us, WE WANNA A TT BEACH CAMPOUT.

So you and Hyway either need to plan a trip, or we will just come camp out on your front lawn.

“two things,

1st, baby turtles didn't have to deal with tire tracks for the last thousand years (nor canyons built by dragging coolers).

2nd, although hammocks beach isn't that far of a hike, its still not car camping. You can carry a lot of stuff on the ferry and you can roll it the 1/2 mile to the beach, but after that you are hiking in sand. the group site is probably only another 1/4 mile so that isn't too bad.

“Ok, so just for the heck of it, how many people would want to come, and what month do we want to do this. The group site has 3 sites that will take up to 12 people in 4 tents per site (so you could have 36 people, yikes). They have built a bath house nearby since the last time I was there. There are also nine separate sites stretching along the beach that can have 6 people in two tents. Then there are 2 other areas that have two sites each one is for canoe/kayak camping the other may also be but its on the beach side. One more thing, no open fires.

“In my area there are no places to camp on the beach. Years ago you probably could, but since all the developing began and erosion problems, you are lucky if there is enough beach to just walk on. Whatever you do, do not walk on the dunes. The fines for that are different in each town, but they have been steadily going up. Some are 500.00 for the first offense.

There are a few campgrounds that are just minutes from the beach, but I am just 5 minutes from the beach myself so I never use them.”

“ok, I will start a new thread when I get confirmation of the date, but for now I am looking at Labor Day weekend. Probably fri-mon (camping fri, sat & sun) This is a full moon weekend so the island should be great for exploring or swimming after dark. Will this work out for the people who have shown and interest. I need to send in the reservation form so that we can get the spots. Right now they are open. Don't know if they will be tomorrow.

BTW, the last ferry leaves at 5:30 from the mainland. If you can't get their in time to get your ferry ticket and board by then plan on coming down on Saturday. I plan to arrive before the last ferry leaves on friday
