In the latest Alpine Club of Canada newsletter there is a link to a UIAA (Union internationale des associations d'alpinisme) paper (in English) about taking contraceptives at altitude. They note that many women take contraceptives to regulate their menstrual cycle and they wanted to see the effects at high altitude.

i used to have a supply of birth control pills on hand for emergency purposes. i could stop and stall a surprise period before and/or during a trip. i don't normally take birth control pills. unfortunately i don't have that doctor anymore. as a smoker over the age of 40 i always knew i was taking a slight chance when backpacking at altitude. but at the time i was healthy, and there is no history of stroke in my family.
