I've been thinking (generally that ends up being a bad idea, just ask lilmountaingirl) that maybe this year I'll finally get around to finish the Adirondack 46, which for those unfamiliar are the 46 mountains that were originally thought to be over 4000'. Here's the twisted part of my plan, I want to finish my first and second round in the same day. Here is what I have left from the list.

First Round:
Redfield 4606'
TableTop 4427'
Phelps 4161'
Cliff 3960'
Nye 3895'

Second Round:
Whiteface 4867'
Gray 4840'
Colden 4714'
Redfield 4606'
Panther 4442'
TableTop 4427'
Seward 4361'
Marshall 4360'
Allen 4340'
Street 4166'
Phelps 4161'
Donaldson 4140'
Seymour 4120'
Colvin 4057'
Emmons 4040'
Blake 3960'
Cliff 3960'
Nye 3895'

Of course you already got the ones that I want to do in September.

Hey, didn't you do Street with Pennsy, Bobo and Me that time we stayed in The Jack Rabbit Inn?

You should come up and hike the Sewards. They're similar to the Dixes, but more remote.

My tentative plan is for 7 to 12 September.
The Labor Day Weekend crowd should be heading home on the 7th.

How many Sewards are there?

3 + 1, Seward, Donaldson, Emmons, and Seymour.

I have the map.

To the East of the Northeast end of Long Lake.

All four peaks are "trailless."

Ok, lets pick the hottest, muggyest day in august and bag some of these...

I'll be out west until the 18th, but after that I may have some time....

Hmmm, they do appear to be trail less.

I will have six days maybe I can do both groups.................or try.

August is a fun time to hike in the Adirondacks. 90 during the day and then 40 at night isn't out of the question. I will keep everyone posted.

At the moment I'd like to try a paddle across Lake Placid and then up Whiteface maybe some time in the next few weeks.

What's wrong with the hottest, muggiest days of September?

Zac, I looked at the map.

The Sewards do appear trail less.

What is your preferred approach to The Dix Range, Round Pond/Rt 73 or Lillian Brook?
MarkO

This sounds super fun. When and how long (time off from work) is the real question. I trust you on the rest.

The Sewards are listed trail less, but there are herdpaths on all of them.

As for the Dix Range, my favorite approach is follow the Boquet Valley from 73 and up the Great Slide on East Dix.

Is that up the South Fork Boquet River?

The river is your trail, eh?

That looks like a bit of bush whackin'.
MarkO

There's a trail if you know how to follow it. If you aren't familiar with the area, it is probably not an advisable route. The Elk Lake side is probably the most reliable route to tagging all 5 peaks in the range.

Elk Lake would be the Lillian Brook side, non?

I have been up and back on that trail twice already and now that I have my own map no tellin' what might happen.

I would like to tag 'em and bag 'em.
MarkO

The trail
/herd path to the Sewards can be difficult to find. From the lean-to you need to backtrack to the stream. The beginning of the trail is on the left bank looking up.

Good luck.

In my opinion, the Sewards + Seymour are a two day project.

Thanks for chiming in Doug. My thought on the Sewards is to camp at Ward Brook, than hike around to the Calkins Brook herdpath, which pretty much puts you halfway down the ridge. Hike out to Emmons and then hike back up the ridge to Ward Brook. The last day hike up Seymour then return to Ward Brook, pack and hike out.

Do you think you'd be ready to make another attempt on the Santanoni's this year?

From your friends post...
"There was no turning back, because instead of just "thinking" about the Northeast 115 in 2009 I "verbalized" it. To everyone. Sometimes you have to keep your thoughts to yourself until you have a chance to think things through."

Man this guy sounds like me... The idea is to tell people your going to do something , because then if you don't, you're left with excuses..

I had this exact conversation with some of the student on Saturday night...

Of course this is how I got myself into the d@mn 50k trail run, the 100k C&O canal event, and the Hike Across MD...

Evil little plans
Note that the trip number has nothing to do with the order of how I want to do these, they are just the order they came to my mind other than the final hike.

Trip 1
Paddle across Lake Placid to Whiteface Landing. Hike up Whiteface. (2 - 3)

Trip 2
Seward Range (2-3)

Trip 3
Upper Works to Uphill. Hit Redfield, & Cliff. Hike over Colden on the way out. (2 - 3 days)

Trip 4
MacIntyre Bushwhack. Upper Works to ADK Loj (1 day)

Trip 5
Elk Lake to Pinnacle, Blake & Colvin, camp at Panther Gorge. Haystack, Marcy, Gray, & Skylight. Hike back to Elk Lake (3 days)

Trip 6
Santanoni Range (1 - 3 days)

Trip 7
Phelps to Tabletop bushwhack (1 day)

Trip 8
Adams & Allen. Bushwhack up old Twin Brook Trail. Cliff & Redfield. Out via Hanging Spear Falls Trail. (2 - 3 days)

Final Trip
Start From Winika Falls, up Street over to Nye. Down to ADK Loj. Hike up Tabletop, bw to Phelps. Back down to the Loj. Back up to Nye. Return to the Loj. (2 days)

Zac - I wish I lived nearer to the Daks - I try to join you for some of that. But send me an e when you're ready to go for the rest of the Northeast 115!

32oz - You and akaFuzz are more gungho than I am. But I have done this about my trip this summer - partly so I am more committed to it, and partly so people know there is a stretch of time they shouldn't count on me for anything. Asking for the time off is a big step.

Wow, one more and you're past the half way mark!

I've got 49 left, the 48 in New York + 1 in Maine. I doubt I'll ever do many in New York. Right now I'm working on my dog's 48 in New Hampshire. She got #s 17 and 18 on Sunday.

I have medical issues right now. I hope to get some short hikes done and then aim for the Santanonis. If it's a wet summer I might try them in the winter.

I'll keep in touch.
