“Hey CB, about 2.5 miles past Wise shelter is Rhododendron Gap. It is a great camping area. I have camped there many times. Lots of room and close to a water source.”

“according to the 2008 edition of wingfoot, it's a little over 4 miles past wise, plus another 1000 feet of elevation gain. if we go to rhododendron gap, thats a 12-mile day. let's assess once we get everyone to wise, then make a decision”

“Didn't seem like it was that far, but I am just going from memory. Sounds like a good plan.”

“here is the plan for now: those that want to do 4 days/41 miles on the trail, start hiking at fox creek (VA 603) on sunday. if the weather forecast looks good, i may start at dickey gap on saturday, and hike to old orchard shelter (10 miles). all meet at old orchard shelter sunday morning, hike to either little wilson creek or wise shelter to camp. if we get there early, we can decide if we want to go to rhododendron gap”

Are you planning on doing this hike with us? If so, are you going to do the longer version with me, Chin, and Bill, or are you starting at Fox Creek with Stomp and Wind?

Saturday's starting point is Dickey Gap. Our campsite will be Old Orchard Shelter.

EVERYONE

Some people will be starting at Fox Creek Sunday morning. The rest will be starting at Dickey Gap Saturday morning. It will be very late morning before the Fox Creek group gets to Old Orchard Shelter. If the Dickey Gap group is not still there when the Fox Creek group gets there, we will all meet at the boundary of Grayson. There is a campsite there, along with Little Wilson Creek and a bridge. It is 7 1/2 miles from where you start at Fox Creek. Make you start southbound when you hit the trail.

“I need to get me a good 30 deg bag. I have some 15 deg bags, a 20 and a 45 (which is really more like a 55) but no 30. Guess I will be doing some shopping at Trail Days.”

“I am kind of worried about that myself Chin! But I have a plan! Since hyway is a sack rat and doesn't get going until like the crack of noon, I am planning on leaving camp at dawn and letting him catch up to me by the end of the day.”

“I'd like to suggest that folks consider treating their clothing with permethrin as a deterrent against ticks. Spraying their tent entrances and equipment, might not be a bad idea as well.

Lyme scares me.”

“Creek is setting the miles per day so if the pace is to fast blame her. Creek, did you create a trips page with mileage?”

“Not yet because I don't know exactly where you will be. Like you said, plans and hiking don't always mesh. This is your hike and I am just along for the ride for a few days. So wherever I pick you on May 8 will be the starting point - probably at or near Pearisburg.

I will post a general plan on your thru hike thread.”

“I'll see Hyway in Damascus. If he wasn't coming to Trail Days it would be different. I'd try to meet up for a day.

At this point I would either slow him down or he would kill me.”

“Looking like highs of 70's lows of 50's. I hope that holds out. I want to take my 40 degree synthetic bag. I will have my dog with me and with the possibility of rain, I think I would be better of with the synthetic bag.”

“It looks like I am in for this one. I am not sure about when I am leaving. I planning to drive my car down. I can pretty much leave when ever. I can be ready to go Thursday or Friday May 6 th or 7 th. If possible I would like to follow someone down. I have never been to Trail Days. I am newbe, but very excited about going. This will be my first hike on the AT. Cant wait.”
