If this whole government health care thing is such a fantastic idea ... if the people want it so bad, then why does the president find it necessary or expedient to be so completely dishonest when discussing it with a national audience? Did he really think that someone wouldn't notice and list the outright lies and misstatements of fact? Did he really think he would get away with that "because she forgot to declare a case of acne" line? Senate Finance Committee Democrats rejected a proposed a requirement that immigrants prove their identity with photo identification when signing up for federal healthcare programs.

Finance Committee ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said that current law and the healthcare bill under consideration are too lax and leave the door open to illegal immigrants defrauding the government using false or stolen identities to obtain benefits.

New Player in Health Care Reform Fight

Here's an interesting development in the health care reform battle: Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports, jumps into the fight with an advertisement backing President Obama's plan.

Said President Jim Guest: "You may wonder why we are injecting ourselves so publicly into a heated debate that has generated an enormous amount of concern and confusion... We are in the business of providing information and advice that helps consumers. We don't make campaign contributions. We don't endorse candidates. And we don't care who gets the credit for fixing the problems with health care -- we just need them fixed. Doing nothing about health care is not a solution."

Politico notes the ad will run for two weeks in the Washington, D.C. market.

WASHINGTON - Doctors are rallying together in protest of the president's plan for health care reform Thursday night, less than 24 hours after he laid out his plan.

"Doctors for Patient Care" is a grassroots organization that's fired up over the president's health care plan. These doctors say it's critical that they make the medical decisions and fear Obama's plan would have the government stepping in.

WASHINGTON � Congressional tax experts say Senate health care legislation would impose $29 billion more in taxes on health care industries than originally thought.

The Joint Committee on Taxation says drug companies, medical device manufacturers and insurers would pay $121 billion over 10 years as a result of taxes in the Senate Finance Committee bill.

That's compared with $92 billion originally calculated.

The tax experts said the reason for the change is that the companies won't be able to deduct the fees from their corporate income taxes.

The new numbers come Tuesday as the Finance Committee is preparing to vote on the bill and could bolster GOP arguments that it contains too many new taxes.

The Medicare denial rate found in the study was, on a weighted average basis, roughly 1.7 times that of all of the private carriers combined (99,025 divided by 2,447,216 is 4.05%; 6.85% divided by 4.05% =1.69).

You would think Medicare's sheer size might enable it to have smoother procedures with its providers that would enable it to turn down a lower percentage of claims. But no, this is the government we're talking about.

So who's the most "heartless" now? And why should Americans accept the idea of gradually being forced into a government-run system when, based on documented government experience, they will be more likely to see their claims denied?

And I didn't even get to the idea of refusals to treat in the first place, something that is present to some degree in virtually every state-run system, but is currently against the law in hospital emergency rooms in the U.S.”

... but you still expect the government to control the costs of your healthcare? According to Medicare's own auditors, it overpays for almost everything it buys. And it does so knowingly. FoxNews has some examples:

-- $7,215 to rent an oxygen concentrator, when the purchase price is $600.

-- $4,018 for a standard wheelchair, while the private sector pays $1,048.

-- $1,825 for a hospital bed, compared to an Internet price of $1,071.

-- $3,335 for a respiratory pump, versus an advertised price of $1,987.

-- $82 for a diabetic supply kit, instead of a $47 price on the Web.

So last year (under the Bush administration) the Health and Human Services Department determined that Medicare could save $1 billion in a single year nationwide, if it replaced its fixed-price fee schedule with a competitive bidding program.

But here's where Congress comes in. Congressmen Fortney "Pete" Stark and Dave Camp introduced legislation that essentially killed any chances of these changes coming to pass. So the competitive bidding programs were deferred. End of story.

As Congress lurches closer to a decision on an enormous overhaul of the American health care system, pressure is mounting on legislative leaders to make the final bill available online for citizens to read before a vote.

Lawmakers were given just hours to examine the $789 billion stimulus plan, sweeping climate-change legislation and a $700 billion bailout package before final votes.

While most Americans normally ignore parliamentary detail, with health care looming, voters are suddenly paying attention. The Senate is expected to vote on a health bill in the weeks to come, representing months of work and stretching to hundreds of pages. And as of now, there is no assurance that members of the public, or even the senators themselves, will be given the chance to read the legislation before a vote.

"The American people are now suspicious of not only the lawmakers, but the process they hide behind to do their work," said Michael Franc, president of government relations for the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

At town hall meetings across the country this past summer, the main topic was health care, but there was a strong undercurrent of anger over the way Congress rushed through passage of the stimulus, global warming and bank bailout bills without seeming to understand the consequences. The stimulus bill, for example, was 1,100 pages long and made available to Congress and the public just 13 hours before lawmakers voted on it. The bill has failed to provide the promised help to the job market, and there was outrage when it was discovered that the legislation included an amendment allowing American International Group, a bailout recipient, to give out millions in employee bonuses.

"If someone had a chance to look at the bill, they would have found that out," said Lisa Rosenberg, who lobbies Congress on behalf of the Sunlight Foundation to bring more transparency to government.

The foundation has begun an effort to get Congress to post bills online, for all to see, 72 hours before lawmakers vote on them.

"It would give the public a chance to really digest and understand what is in the bill," Rosenberg said, "and communicate whether that is a good or a bad thing while there is still time to fix it."

A similar effort is under way in Congress. Reps. Brian Baird, D-Wash., and Greg Walden, R-Ore., are circulating a petition among House lawmakers that would force a vote on the 72-hour rule.

Nearly every Republican has signed on, but the Democratic leadership is unwilling to cede control over when bills are brought to the floor for votes and are discouraging their rank and file from signing the petition. Senate Democrats voted down a similar measure last week for the health care bill.

The reluctance to implement a three-day rule is not unique to the Democrats.

The Republican majority rushed through the controversial Patriot Act in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as well as a massive Medicare prescription drug bill in 2003 that added hundreds of billions of dollars to the deficit.

For the majority party, legislative timing plays a big role in whether a bill will pass because support can be fleeting.

"The leaders use it as a tool to get votes or to keep amendments off a bill," said one top Senate Democratic aide.

But Baird warned of public backlash.

"Democrats know politically it's difficult to defend not doing this," he said. "The public gets this. They say we entrust you with the profound responsibility of making decisions that affect our lives, and we expect you to exercise due diligence in carrying out that responsibility."”

“Just out today, the Congressional Budget Office says that the health care bill is coming in under the line drawn by the administrations at 92 billion. Their findings also show that this would help decrease the deficit.
Another note. Former senator, Bob Dole is calling for health care reform. He said that there are too many people opposing the present administration just to achieve a political victory, but that health-care legislation is too important to continue to take this tactic.”

The Congressional Budget Office preliminary estimate of the Senate Finance Committee�s work is a devastating revelation. The bill is a platform for an enormous jump in federal spending, and yet it still leaves 25 million Americans without health insurance. The gross cost of new federal outlays increased from $738 billion to $829 billion. Meanwhile, the Baucus bill will accelerate, contrary to the president�s rhetoric, the government�s �takeover� of the health care sector of the economy. Nearly half of the individuals who gain insurance will be through Medicaid, a poorly performing program that is insulated from any serious systemic improvement. Expanding Medicaid, a welfare program, is not health care reform.

In its letter to Senator Max Baucus, CBO also makes it crystal clear that its work is not over and actual legislative language is imperative to completing its work. The higher spending is offset with higher tax collections. The Senate Finance Committee mark also depends on budget gimmicks - not paying for fixing the Medicare physician fee schedule nor for reauthorization of the State Children�s Health Insurance Program.

In short, the news from CBO is not good news for the American taxpayers.”
