My Collegiates recommendation is either backpack up Pine Creek toward Missouri Basin or car camp near the ghost town of Winfield.

So you went to Lake City, p? I love that place. Climb any mountains?

several. We've been talking about a climbing trip (roped climbing) the weekend immediately following Labor Day - but those dates aren't set in stone. I've got reasonable flexibility at least with weekends and can get one or two days off in the week to get a nice long weekend.

You two should plan your trip and I'll work with your schedule.

I'd love to do Capitol and Snowmass, but I'd equally enjoy the Collegiates.

i was planning on the labor day roped climbing trip. since i would be in the area and acclimated doing some stuff in the collegiates and/or capitol would be super cool. as usual, i am easy.

roam posted a backpacking trip on the other thread that sounded good.

You could make a really nice backpacking trip, with a little off trail bushwhack/exlporation/route finding :) and camp in the "Pierre Lakes Basin". I'm not sure exactly what the access to the standard routes on Capitol or Snowmass would be from there, but i'm sure it'd be 'doable somehow'. That's a trip I've had my eye on for a while - I've seen pics taken from in there and its rather spectacular - check it out on a map of the area. If I recall, the Pierre Lakes area is due east of Capitol and Snowmass.

obviously this could/would involve some climbing.

hmm... I didn't see it in the book.

Just by looking at the thumbnails at 14ers.com and nothing else my shortlist for peak pics might be something like:

Elbert
Massive
Holy Cross
Maroon Peak
Snowmass
Conundrum Peak
Pyramid Peak
North Maroon Peak
Ellingwood Point
Mt Sneffels
Capitol Peak and Knife Ridge
Wetterhorn

Can we nail down the dates a little more in the next week to 10 days? I'm using air miles so I gotta get them set up with a flight plan.

definitely Yogi. It really depends on how long you can stay out here and how you want to allocate your time. I didn't mean to ever imply that i was trading peak bagging 14er's for roped climbs.

We've talked about your climbing trip for a while.

Yogi, what's you guys schedule like?

I'm loolking at the calendar and see that if I leave the week of or after you-and-roam's get-together that it might be a better schedule than my original dates. Maybe I could spend a few days on your tips too?

i am flying in on the 9th arriving in the early evening and flying out on the 14th late in the afternoon. i don't know what the plan is (it's roamaround's trip) but i do know the focus is roped climbing. i am totally stoked about the trip... climbing in places i have only seen in photos! i still have a bum finger, but i'll tape it up and climb on!

Rock climbing, Eldorado Canyon and Lumpy Ridge (RMNP) mainly. With perhaps a day spent on a technical climb of a 14er, or nearly 14er. We'll spend the first couple of days in Eldo and then move up to Lumpy Ridge to help with dealing with altitude. The alpine day is an option for the tail end pending how good we feel.

precision

Well, here's the thing, some of what I've been planning to do with yogi would be ok with a beginner climber, but a good bit of it wouldn't necessarily be great to do with a beginner, or with a 3 man team.

Our first day I'd sort of planned to be on milder stuff just to give us a chance to get comfortable working as a team and become accustomed to each other's belay and get our communication dialed in.

I think it'd be fine for you to hook up with us for that day - which would be thursday the 10th.

The rest of our days though, I've been planning on bigger multi-pitch routes (3 or 4 rope lengths) which, while doable with a three man team, are much simpler (and safer) with a two person team. Chances are I could round up a 4th person for Sat or Sun to join us though.

Also, on either Sat or Sun, I'd thought we might either do a route on a big mountain - which I would not want to do in a 3 man team, or - and this depends on how strong we feel - we would do a more laid back Clas 3 or 4 route on a big mountain - this would be fine to do in a 3 man team.

< disclaimer > Now - I am not a guide, nor do I play one on TV. Climbing is dangerous and you could die, or worse. If you decide to come do some of this, your responsible for your own safety and decision making. < /disclaimer >

But, i also have another buddy out here that would most likely be up for scrabling up a 14er, or a near 14er somewhere and he's a real good dude to hike and camp with. If you don't spend the whole time with us, i could hook you up with TMac (if he's available), I'd told him you were coming out and he was open to doing something.

-edit- oh yeah - gear - i do have an extra harness or two and a couple pairs of shoes - depends on what size shoe you wear. I think i have a pair of (mens) 9, 10 and 10.5 So long as they fit reasonably well, you could get by for a day or so in them.

You're not a guide. I'm responsible for my own safety. But as a fellow climber/hiker it'd svck if anything happened to any one of us. So I really get that you want to do things the right way.

So I'll keep the plans flexible--but plan to meet up with you and yogi on the 9th or 10th. Where can I meet up with one or both of you on one of your arrival days?
precision

Yes - any sort of accident with injury or worse would really just ruin the whole trip for all involved.

Well, I live here. :) yogi is arriving the evening of the 9th, around 7:00 pm. You could plan to meet us that night - I live in Longmont - or probably better, we could meet up the morning of the 10th before we head into Eldo.

Hey Precision, to get a sense of some of the routes we could do that first day, take a look at this page - http://www.mountainproject.com/v/colorado/boulder/eldorado_canyon_sp/105744711 any of the routes there graded 5.6 or lower would be the sort of thing i'd put you on for your first time out.

I've got a spare pair of 10.5 shoes as well.

At DIA waiting for my flight home. I want to thank RoamAround for putting together such a great trip and especially his hospitality during my stay. He and his girlfriend (no trail name yet so I won't post her real name) made me feel totally at home. Roam set up 5 days of tough climbing that really pushed me to my limits both physically and as climber. A lot of doors opened for me this week and it was a huge boost to my confidince. I am whipped and it will take me a week to physically recover... but I will never recover from the views I saw from my free-hanging rappel in Eldorado Canyon or my struggle with "Knee Catcher" clmbing on lead WAY above me highest lead yet. What a week!

let's do some more of this
Sure did... After I left Boulder I went to Evans. I got most of the way up put was pelted with serious hail, which was ok, until the lightening started cracking rocks around me... you know you're too close when you hear "szzzit" and the flashes are yellow rather than white-ish.

Thanks again for the great climb... I think I'll do fine with more sustained climbs with a tad more experience... looking to the past weekend I guess I was pretty strong at the easier trads... I was pretty much humbled and surprised yet confident at the same time... it felt good-- the work to get up there...

PS I didn't think to mention it at lunch but...
On my way back down from Capitol I met a climber going up. I after I talked with him for a while and we parted, it occurred to me that the hiker/climber I had been talking to was the well-known Alan Arnette ( http://www.alanarnette.com/ ). He's posted with pretty pictures about his climb on 14ers.com... Had I realized it was Alan soloing up the Cap while I was speaking with him at the road-part of the trail I think I'd-a turned around and gone back up if it was ok with him. What a geat opportunity to learn that was missed.... goes to show me you never know who you'll meet out on the Colorado trail. Anyways, he was really friendly. And it was a treat to talk with him, if only ever-so briefly.

Also thanks to Jesse for the picture http://www.14ers.com/images/trips/capi/29_2009091118140329_l.jpg
