Any Geologist or TT'ers with Park Ranger ties?View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 19 of 19 messages posted.
“I'm looking at going back to school to pursure a B.S. or Masters in Geology. Wanted to know if we had any on the Board. Kinda want to use it as a way to work in a research/conservationist manner with the government, i.e. the Park systems. Anyone know a Ranger I could talk to about other alternative routes into their system? Aside from the below degrees, it looks like most have to volunteer several long term periods. I know you have to have a science related degree (botany, geology, forestry, conservation, etc), and I started down this path in college, but sheeped myself down the management road.” 7:48:49 PM 7/14/09 “Sounds awesome...good for you!” 9:55:27 PM 7/14/09 “Interesting. I'm looking into a forestry degree myself but plan to leave my options open to geology also. I'll be monitoring this thread.” 10:46:08 PM 7/14/09 “The NPS rangers in the GSMNP are mostly Criminal Justice majors.” 5:30:38 AM 7/15/09 “Yes, I have a possible connection like you mentioned” 5:34:50 AM 7/15/09 “Opie, most often I have had friends who "interned" while they were doing their degrees.” 5:34:57 AM 7/15/09 “I have a buddy that has a Geology degree that wound up as a contractor. I have another one with a MS in Biology that wound up as a safety officer at a cement plant. I bet either would be willing to chat about what they ran into after school. Also, embears brother was a forest ranger at the state level in TN. I bet she could get him to chat with you. I bet you could call up the Sipsey folks and chat, though I remember what a dead end that was when they wanted you to pick up butts on the road....oh and the time they pulled you over looking for beer cans...wait, maybe you should call someone at the NP level instead.” 5:37:48 AM 7/15/09 “Post me on facebook. I may have a good TN ranger contact for you.” 5:43:09 AM 7/15/09 “Aero is a geologist.” 8:03:02 AM 7/15/09 “wasn't twinkletoes doing something related to rocks?” 12:43:14 PM 7/15/09 “I have a forestry degree...good luck finding a job in the field :) around here anyway...” 7:16:16 PM 7/15/09 “I'm a geologist,I work in hydrocarbon extraction industry. Going to be lots of high paying jobs coming open in the next few years, average age of geologists in the oil business is over 50.” 7:17:48 PM 7/15/09 “good luck finding a job in the field :) around here anyway...” ~spirit coyote Try Mexico” 7:41:23 PM 7/15/09 “I thought the Wyoming School of Engineering was heavily recruiting and offering full scholorships. Seems like I hear on NPR about a year ago that they are predicting an acute shortage.” 7:43:18 PM 7/15/09 “Chuck, i figured I could do the oil industry, if I couldn't go the research path. Highest Profits ever in that industry...” 9:19:17 PM 7/15/09 11:18:17 PM 7/15/09 “Minimum degree in Geology these days is an MS, a PhD will get you a lot farther. All a BS will get you is a low level technican job, except in the oil field service side of the business, the BS will get you in, hard work will get you promoted.” 9:12:22 AM 7/16/09 “I figured that. I already have a B.S. in Commerce and Business. Masters courses look big and hairy in the course catalog!” 1:18:30 PM 7/16/09 “Do Rangers wear ties?” 1:25:07 PM 7/16/09
