Florida ideas?
A friend and I are thinking of going to the Everglades next February. We have seen some information about the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness and wonder if it is as cool as it looks.
Any input?

What activities did you have in mind? For hiking, I would recommend The Big:

I have cruised through during three seperate Christmas breaks, and everything was neck deep in water. That might not be the case six weeks later.

It is high on my bucket list of places to go. My brother and I have talked about a float trip for a few years now over on the Gulf Coast side.

Hopefully, smokygirl will show up here. I think she went to the Glades a couple of years ago.

10,000 Islands, chili? That would be some nice yakkin' if one was into that sort of thing.

Yes, gojo, along the Wilderness Waterway. I would like to take a three or four day trip there.

The Everglades is a paddlers paradise but not much for hiking. I think it'd be a great place to spend a few days with a kayak or canoe.

check out the forums at www.paddling.net

I've not used that forum since I moved from FL 5 years ago, but it used to be a good source of water info.

The entire state of Florida is a paddlers paradise. I have a nephew that's *this close* to completing the Suwanee River from the swomp to the gulf.

I rented a canoe while camping at Long Key SP. I made my way from the park's lagoon to Long Key Point - a distance of several miles. While anchored (by a piece of petrified coral - the Conch Republic's official rock) at the point, I landed a variety of fishes, including a nearly five foot blue shark. Call me Ishmial - wheeeeeeeee!!

Nice to see some familiar names. Hi Gojo!! kisses to Belle and Gizmeaux, ok?
Thanks for the information. If we end up doing this we will be really green so any advice would be welcome. Has anyone ever stayed at a Chikee? Would one rather stay at one of them or the beach? How far can a couple of strong but inexperienced paddlers expect to go in one day and still have fun?
Anyone heard from Om lately? She would probably have some Florida insight.
