I think anyone who's hiked with me knows my opinion on this...I've upgraded from a 9MM to a 40, still a Sig Sauer though...

We've had the whole carry don't carry flame postings before; I carry, you don't..so be it.

I grew up with the rednecks in the south. I have been to dog fights and rat killings. I have been boots on the ground during a moonshine run and even participated in a rattlesnake rodeo.

I've been in my share of honky tonks and road houses.

IMHO, sometimes, looks ain't deceiving.

LMAO! The sissy California guy freaks out after running into a roughneck who made apparently made NO aggressive move whatsoever, even trying to converse.

Excuse me, but that is f*cking hilarious! How f*cking INEFFECTUAL are you outside your latte drinking, birkenstock wearing urban world? Here you were, a stormcloud over your trip, and you fantasizing like a damn kid about cutting the guy with your pocket knife. LMAO!!!! And all because the guy looked like he's from the Ozarks. LOLOL!!! Funniest post in weeks!

Maybe we can all learn something from these two outstanding citizens.”

Actually, Mutt, I did have a latte yesterday. Add shot, lowfat. I hate birkenstocks and none of my friends wear them. We live in water country, so Tevas are the preferred sandalwear, if one is to wear sandals. And, maybe I did over-react, but I'm a generally perceptive fellow, particularly with the family around. Take a break from your middle America rathole and come on out to Sissylandia.

I'll tell you when its OK to judge someone by their looks: whenever the situation doesn't feel right. To not be observant of the situation and to listen to your inner voice telling you "this doesn't feel right" is an invitation to become a victim.

That doesn't mean you should spit on a guy who looks rough, but there is nothing wrong with a contingency plan, even if it is just "run away!"

There have been times hiking with my wife and small kids that it was reassuring to feel the weight of my 45 cal in my belly pack. It made me a lot more confident dealing with scum on the trail. Anyone who says that assualt on the trail is never going to happen, good luck with that.

Rosey, you have just had an incident that "Made me start thinking about carrying a gun” in your own words. Its totally your choice whether you carry a handgun or not, but it is reasonable for some people to choose to carry some insurance just for incidents like that. Some bear spray could be very effective also. Each to his own. I have only carried a handgun when on day hikes with the family.

Well, for those who never made it out of second grade reading comprehension, maybe I'll just repost what I wrote before.

Made me start thinking about carrying a gun.

See Stove, thinking and doing are two entirely separate actions. I know you have a hard time differentiating between the two because you live in bizzaroland, but they really are two separate actions. One uses only the mind, which is obviously quite a challenge for you, and the other connotes physical action, which is also probably quite a challenge for you. Either way, I understand that you are challenged, so I hope this lesson has proved of value.

So you carry a pocket knife instead. Do you know anything about fighting with a knife? I feel safe guessing you don't. If you meet up with someone who knows even just the basics, you're going to get your ass handed to you. Whatever weapon you use, be sure to get training.

I respect that, idaho bob.

Nope. No formal training in knife fighting. I was a sous chef for most of my teen years, so I'm pretty adept at sharpening, chopping, dicing, slicing and carving.

Of course, I'm not going into the combat zone in Missouri all the time, like you Mutt. Do you feel better when you kick out grandma's knee so you can get across the street first?

Oh, I'd add that I don't carry a knife for self defense, as you were implying, Mutt. I just had it on me because we were camping. I do have one of those little Swisstec keychain knives with me at all times though and I'm quite deadly at opening packaging tape with it.

If you are thinking of your knife as an emergency weapon, take a look at a Mora knife; great camping knife, light weight, fixed blade, inexpensive, wicked sharp. I have mine on all camping trips.
