I dropped out of this trip a short time ago. Since I'll be taking off 6 months to hike the AT, I can't be taking off other weekends just now. Plus my wife has volunteered me to go to Northern Virginia to help her brother move in a couple weekends.”

“im back in linville falls and just tried to drive back to camp and could not make it with 4x4 pickup.nothin bit ice i slid backwards then hit the bank and was sideways then turned wheel down hill and slid against bank.chains or steel studded tires are needed as of now.they usually take a grader through but since we had 20 inches of snow on dec 18th they have done nothing.should get another 5 inches of snow before this trip.it may hit 40 around the 12th so road should be better hopefully”

“I just hiked back and theres plenty of firewood that's for sure.5 degrees and windy.as of now the road is a single lane sheet of ice with trees down and limbs every place.yes there is a path but good luck passing anyone.it looks like a war zone back there.the trails are great though with just snow as I went down babal tower to lgt up to pine gap and marion wright tr and they are fine.a lot of blow down.I would say without chains or studded tires u may make it to bynum bluff.maybe it will be better for u on fri jb.I left a little sumthin for u under the triangle shaped rock in the fire pit.lol”

You better hope they are wrong because with the ground as cold as it is 40� will just make it more slick. Ice with a layer of water on top...just what I want to drive on...NOT! After almost 2' of snow a couple of 40� might help the south facing slopes but the north facing slopes will get no sun.

No I don't trust extended forecasts past about 3 days...I don't trust weather.com for a 3 hour forecast, I use the NWS and even then I check it up to the moment I am about to walk out the door.”

Just how far is the campsite from the parking area?”

“I think moonshine said it was about a mile from the nearest large parking area. There is some parking at the campsite but it is limited so there might have to be some shuttle action if everyone that is signed up shows up.”

“i dont think shuttling will be a problem at all... and actually we'll probably have to shuttle due to cars not being able to get to the campsite (due to 2wd)”
