In 2007, we had almost perfect ski conditions; 2008 was a bit more challenging--plenty of snow but -40 F. wind chills; 2009 had temps in the 20's but we did a candlelight hike (which was still very cool) because of minimal snow base. In other words, be prepared for last-minute gear adjustments depending on the weather.

I'm looking forward to doing it again. Thanks Croft for posting this fun trip.

Wow, this trip is the first one listed on the "trips" page--must mean it's coming up soon. I'm SO ready.

Anyone interested in taking advantage of the outdoor grill at the warming shelter by the beach and cooking our Saturday evening meal there?

That would be a more socialable idea there Croft. One would then opt for a meal that did not require a lot of pots and pans to transport back and forth. Foil pouch cooking for Saturday night would be in order if the wind and weather favor the outdoor grill at the warming shelter by the beach.

Pros, exactly my thoughts--and since the shelter is near the parking lot, we could leave the Saturday night meal in the car rather than schlepping it back and forth from camp.

Long range forecast has daytime temps in the 20's and lows in the teens. Snow flurries projected several times in the next 10 days but no major snowfall anticipated. Will update with trail conditions around the 10th.

The current forecast for our destination calls for a 60% chance of snow on Tuesday, and no thaws from now to the end of the trip. My ETA will be around 3:00 p.m. Friday. Looking good for camping and skiing.

Trail Conditions
Newport received 3 1/2" of snow, not enough for them to groom the ski trails, but it is skiable--just not much between you and the dry ground. I'm bringing my skis but if there's too many dry spots, I think I'll hike instead rather than all of you die from laughter watching my face plant on skis.

See y'all tomorrow. Firebug and I should be arriving around 2 or so.

The forecast calls for weather that will be ideal for winter camping. I am already packed except for the food. Hiking boots and skis. See you there no later than 3:00 p.m.
