This. There are 3 leantos plus I think you can climb Catamount from there.

Do these lakes/ponds freeze over in winter? Or will there be open water?
Euro hike

Usually by Presidents Day everything is frozen solid. The one year we cut a long distance off our hike in since we were able to cut straight across the lake.

I find the idea of hiking across a frozen lake kind of frightening. How do you know when the ice is thick enough to carry the weight of a person an gear? Do you send the heaviest ahead?
I have never done ice fishing. Would that be allowed? Or is that too much gear and work to bother with on a trip?
Euro hike

I have called the local rangers in the past to check ahead. I had one tell me that the ice was so thick you could drive a truck across it.

Ice fishing would depend on how you plan on spending your day...hiking or just fishing.

I thought I read somewhere that Taylor Pond is open to snowmobiles?
Adventurist

I guess one would need a whole day just to drill through ice thick enough to carry a truck :-)

Less than 4 inches – STAY OFF! There is no reason to test the newly formed ice at this time.

4-6 Inches – Ice fishing, foot travel in single-file lines, and small spaced seating on the ice should be safe, presuming the ice is clear and clean.

6-10 Inches – Snowmobiles and ATV’s can travel safely on good ice that is over inches thick.

10-16 Inches – Small cars and pick-ups can begin to venture on to the ice. However, the DNR states that it is best to avoid driving on the ice whenever possible.

16+ Inches – A medium-sized car or mid-size pickup can drive on good clear solid ice.

much less sophisticated then Adventurist leads ppl to believe...we sent him first with a full sled...he madse it so we knew it was safe

For next year 2010 trip we should send Euro out on the ice first to see if it is safe.

how about the northern ADKs? Is there not a leanto on an island or some remote area of Lake Placid that you must cross the lake in order to get to?

My post did not appear. Taylor Pond is in the northern Daks, but I do not think you can do Porter from there. I will check.

There is a trailhead to Whiteface that you have to boat to in summer or cross on the ice in winter.

Taylor Pond is north of Whiteface and nowhere near Porter. The closest mountain geographically is Catamount. It would be a bushwack up the north side - which I have never done. Also, Catamount from the south would be quite the winter climb - the chimney near the South summit would require a rope in winter.

The closest mountain by road would be Silver Lake Mountain which I did in 1989. It is a nice walk and would be fun in winter.

I believe the closest mountains to Cascade Pond are Regis and Azure, both short and easy winter hikes. Debar is not far and is a good winter hike.

It was April. It was the Catskills Final Peak Bagging Trip for ENS and Crazypace. I was in the parking area and stumbled upon a "lost little French man". I brought him into camp having NO clue who he was. Go figure.
