Poor MarkO. He still thinks the maze on the back of the kids menu is a map.

Id love to do Giant in the winter if its doable.

Giant is more than doable in the winter. Before my two hiking buddies moved away we would do Giant every Christmas and Algonquin at Easter. Some Easters were too warm and access was impossible, but most of the time they were good hikes.

If you do it, Jackstraw, don`t leave your snowshoes up on top.

I past years I have poured over my maps and guide books looking for a good spot and our fearless leader and organizer never picks the spots I suggest. So this time I am going to keep my mouth shut and maybe she will pick one of the great spots I have found.

What about water treatment on this trip? I have a MSR filter. Is water treatment necessary in winter? Are we taking snow for melting water?
Euro hike

Yes. Bring your own snow.
gojo

Don`t bring a water filter. It will freeze and ruin the filter. In the past we melted snow or boiled water from a nearby stream or lake.

Not sure if I am allowed to bring large quantaties of Swiss snow into the US?

Everybody brings their own stoves for boiling water and cooking meals or will you organise stove sharing?
Euro hike

That`s ok. The mountains should provide their own snow.

Hey, it`s snowing right now!
lumberzac

Definitely stove sharing. You will not need to bring one, Euro. You need as much space in your backpack as possible. Cold weather clothing is very bulky (mitts, parka and booties).

Hey MarkO, say, do you have a twin brother in Bern? I think I just dated him. He looked totally like you with beard.

Are you going to wear a beard on FYAO?

I usually grow a beard for a few weeks prior to FYAO to keep warm and it looks wicked when the icicles form around the mouth.

Cook for whom?

No worries zac. My mom used to put game overnight into buttermilk - to soften up the texture and took some of the gamy taste out of the meat. You like buttermilk?

Well, it is prudence that we should discuss who we eat in case we run out of food. I think one person should sacrify themself so that the rest of the group can survive.
