Sign UP!” 11:24:40 AM 10/25/09 “Will there be any bears...............there?” 11:25:34 AM 10/25/09 “YES!!!” 11:30:15 AM 10/25/09 “I know how to navigate with map and compass. GPS is for sissies.” 11:33:17 AM 10/25/09 “okay?” 11:41:06 AM 10/25/09 “Heh heh!” 11:46:25 AM 10/25/09 “Sign Up..” 4:52:40 PM 11/10/09 “Bump!” 7:28:22 AM 11/11/09 “Maybe this trip will do. No trails all on a plateau with open woods easy backpacking plenty of bears.” 4:57:41 PM 11/11/09 “Refrigerator, I am thinking about doing this trip or your beartown one. Which one do you think is better. I could probably only do one.” 4:00:00 PM 11/21/09 “E mail me Refrigeratorfridge@gmail.com Most Backpackers are affraid of backpacking off a tenny shoe trail. much less BEAR COUNTRY. E mail me Yotaman! Most sign up and never go.” 4:39:26 PM 11/21/09 “Frige, whats the plan? (oops- I guess there doesnt have to be a plan for a true bushwack) Total mileage for the weekend? Also, you plan on starting Sat morn and finishing Mon afternoon? What do you think the night time temps are that time of year?” 9:45:46 PM 11/21/09 “Wanna see a bear!” 3:56:48 AM 11/22/09 “lowandslow/ Temps will be 40 at night and could be 50 day. Bears will start to move that time of year. Mileage will be less than 5 miles a day. Bushwhack and plotting a route will take some time. My plan was to return to the same area I am familiar with, plan on other route to make a different loupe back out. Last year we seen many many bear sign and my Black Lab was always peeling her ears back and eyes focused out of camp all night you could hear bears moving. Plenty of wood to build a fire. I will have bear spray and a weapon.” 5:50:06 AM 11/22/09 “E-mail sent.” 9:34:55 AM 11/22/09 Dogs and Bears “I was told by a few of my backpacking friends that it is unwise to bring a dog on a hike where there is a strong possibility of encountering a bear. Does it depend on the dog and how well you can control it with your voice? (Thinking of bringing my dog, too) Should everyone that comes on this trip bring bearspray? We hiked in the Cranberry Wilderness last March and we saw a ton (not literally) of bearsign there, too.” 11:34:37 AM 11/22/09 “lowandslow....Yep Cranberry has lots of Bears. My 2 dogs both will do exactly what I tell them me being the Alpha period. Bear spray is up to you...I use it when in this area.” 12:12:02 PM 11/22/09 “I saw one of them bares bathing in The Middle Fork.” 12:29:36 PM 11/22/09 “I bet that bare was hanging.” 12:48:55 PM 11/22/09 “It was too scary to look.” 12:59:35 PM 11/22/09 “little BEFF.....fits you MarkO” 1:11:11 PM 11/22/09 “Dontcha gimme no lines and keep your hands to yourself.” 2:37:50 PM 11/22/09 “who did that one?” 2:53:54 PM 11/22/09 3:02:48 PM 11/22/09 Better Yet 3:07:40 PM 11/22/09 “bares? weapons? hangin? exactly what kind of hanging weapon will protect me from bares? Im so confused!!” 5:39:57 AM 11/23/09 “He`s jive ass, that Fridge.” 5:55:33 AM 11/23/09 “Fridge, you get my email?” 3:15:50 PM 11/23/09 4:36:17 PM 11/23/09 “Ok fridge, I just sent another one.” 3:50:58 PM 11/24/09 “Yotaman - YGM” 4:06:03 PM 11/24/09 “Fridge I have not seen one bear on any of your trips...but we did see those tracks by camp at Cranberry. Hopefully this time things will work out.” 9:33:10 AM 3/09/10 “Bump” 6:48:53 AM 3/10/10 “ "all night you could hear bears moving.”BULL! You don't hear black bears moving unless they are running, crashing through a thicket, or breathing down your neck. I suggest that you heard some other type of wildlife, perhaps trying to avoid the bears, if they were present.” 3:55:27 PM 3/12/10 “ah you can hear them digging stumps and pulling the wild grapes down. Very little deer scat will be seen there and loads of bear scat.” 5:06:24 PM 3/14/10 “Well, ok then. I would consider that a little different than "all night you could hear bears moving."” 5:49:30 PM 3/14/10 “who cares” 2:54:51 AM 3/15/10 “What are they moving, pianos?” 3:43:39 AM 3/15/10 “I carez, ahz skeer't of them black woolly bears” 12:55:05 PM 3/15/10 “Bring that black woolly dawg, heh?” 8:20:48 AM 3/18/10 “OK, fridge. Hope its the same next weekend.” 4:17:16 PM 3/19/10 “yotaman be sure and bring a bear bag or canister. If you need to borrow, I have!” 4:19:38 PM 3/19/10 “Directions: From I-77, take Exit 52 and go east on US 52 into Bland. In Bland, turn left (north), staying on US 52, and continue 3.9 miles. Turn right on VA 612. Go .3 mile and turn left on FR 640 (rough road). After 4.6 miles, stop at parking area on right.” 4:46:13 PM 3/19/10 “Are we camping at that spot or just meeting there at a specific time? Aldo, all I have is a nylon bag that I use for my food bag. Does that count?” 11:23:03 AM 3/20/10 << back to Deam Wilderness page
