“This will be my 2nd time ever there. I have never seen more Bear sign ever in Virginia like last year in Kimberling. This area is wild remote.

“Frige, whats the plan? (oops- I guess there doesnt have to be a plan for a true bushwack) Total mileage for the weekend? Also, you plan on starting Sat morn and finishing Mon afternoon? What do you think the night time temps are that time of year?”

“lowandslow/ Temps will be 40 at night and could be 50 day. Bears will start to move that time of year. Mileage will be less than 5 miles a day. Bushwhack and plotting a route will take some time. My plan was to return to the same area I am familiar with, plan on other route to make a different loupe back out. Last year we seen many many bear sign and my Black Lab was always peeling her ears back and eyes focused out of camp all night you could hear bears moving.
Plenty of wood to build a fire. I will have bear spray and a weapon.”

“I was told by a few of my backpacking friends that it is unwise to bring a dog on a hike where there is a strong possibility of encountering a bear. Does it depend on the dog and how well you can control it with your voice? (Thinking of bringing my dog, too)

Should everyone that comes on this trip bring bearspray?

We hiked in the Cranberry Wilderness last March and we saw a ton (not literally) of bearsign there, too.”

“lowandslow....Yep Cranberry has lots of Bears. My 2 dogs both will do exactly what I tell them me being the Alpha period. Bear spray is up to you...I use it when in this area.”

“Fridge I have not seen one bear on any of your trips...but we did see those tracks by camp at Cranberry. The pups were acting crazy then too.

BULL! You don't hear black bears moving unless they are running, crashing through a thicket, or breathing down your neck. I suggest that you heard some other type of wildlife, perhaps trying to avoid the bears, if they were present.”

“yotaman I'll have the details by saturday evening. Yea I'm slackin....But eh....it's spring time.”

“Directions: From I-77, take Exit 52 and go east on US 52 into Bland. In Bland, turn left (north), staying on US 52, and continue 3.9 miles. Turn right on VA 612. Go .3 mile and turn left on FR 640 (rough road). After 4.6 miles, stop at parking area on right.”

“Are we camping at that spot or just meeting there at a specific time? Aldo, all I have is a nylon bag that I use for my food bag. Does that count?”
