No tip leads to trip in police cruiser for pair of local college students

Moravian College senior Leslie Pope and John Wagner, a Lehigh University graduate student, were handcuffed and transported from the Lehigh Pub to Bethlehem police headquarters Oct. 23 after failing to pay a mandatory 18 percent gratuity.

Pope and Wagner, members of a party of eight during happy hour, refused to pay a $16.35 service charge on top of their $73.87 tab because of what they say was shoddy service as well as a surcharge that was nearly 5 percent higher than the 18 percent listed on the menu.

“Gratuity is thanking you for your service,” Pope, 22, said. “You can't give us terrible, terrible service and expect a tip.”

The group reportedly had to wait more than an hour for salad and wings and had to approach the bar themselves for drink refills and find their own napkins and silverware as their waitress smoked outside.

I think this puts a lie to the phrase: "There is no such thing as bad publicity".

I think mandatory gratuity on a bill is bs. A tip is a reward to your server for good service.

Well if we get the mandatory and bad service we all fill our glasses and then invert them on the table.

Another trick was to mix the condiment containers.

update

It is dumb to call a mandatory service charge a "gratuity" - but if the policy is clearly stated and you order anyway - you should pay up. The fact that the charge was higher than what the menu said gives the students a legitimate beef.

Large groups do tend to stiff wait staff - so mandatory tips for large groups is not out of line.

In this case - though - it looks like the s

Lol, I hate having a server at a bar. Way to many stories about things getting screwed up. Now days, I just sit on a stool and get my drinks straight from the bartender. If that is not an option, then I do walk up and get them straight from him/her. I remove servers from the equation completely. I have no idea why, but servers at bars have a tendency to be very lousy at what they do.

Ha, I only go to bars that serve overpriced snooty beer. As a matter of fact, the bar I frequent most often doesnt have Bud or Miller on tap. Great place, great food, great owner, but the girl that waits tables needs to go. Same with the bar a couple blocks down the road. Nice beer selection, awesome food, but morons working the place. What part of, no I think we are done, means bring me another pitcher of overpriced beer? (Great Lakes Oktoberfest on that occasion.)

somthings missing...not enough details...i suspect their arrest had less to do with the tip and more to do with their reaction to having to pay it
