“And then there was Dolly, an inflatable sheep (anatomically correct - don't ask) that my high school rugby girls presented to me in Victoria, BC on a school sports, cultural exchange.

Doly became the girls' team mascot and I kept her in the trunk of my car. Most of my hiking-backpacking-winter mountaineering and fly fishing are done in New York State. Customs would always check the contents of my trunk and invariably when I arrived at trailhed, et c. I would find Dolly on the top.

When I drove out to Wyoming in 2 005 I was stopped at a roadblock near Detroit and the troopers looked in my trunk. Sure enough, when I stopped at a state camp ground for the night Dolly was on top of everything.

No-one ever (and I mean ever) asked me a question.

Dolly finally melted.”
