Ken, TT is a great site and there is nothing wrong with it. The problem lies with the posters and their lack of discipline and self control. There is an ignore feature. We are all free to post what we want and read what we want. Dont let anyone tell you differently. Some of the biggest complainers you may have encountered recently were also some of the biggest offenders.”

“As a desktop and web app developer I can tell you that if you focus this site on backpacking only, it will die. Sites that do not develop a community go away. You want traffic to keep your ad revenue up. We want traffic to keep the community going. Below a certain critical mass it will turn into one of the hundreds of other backpacking related sites that have great information but no community.



Get rid of the infighting - GREAT - but not the off-topic discussions. After being a regular for over 4.5 years I left for a year because of all the infighting. Most of that fighting is gone now which is why Im back. Eliminate the rest and you dont need to make any other changes. Eliminating Fuego might help.

Secondly, keep statistics on the number of outdoor related posts versus non related posts. I can name a handful that rarely, if ever, post anything even remotely related to the outdoors.”

“People have posed as owners and moderators before - so I write this as a for what its worth:

I think volunteer moderation would work if there were a few very simple and clearly enforced rules.

Participant volunteers should either be unable to ban posters or there should be an appeals process.

The on person I would trust to make decisions about banning would be the person who posted as Phil - not that he would want to do it.”
