My friend in Ft. Worth has been on me to fly out and go on a backpacking trip with him out that way. I know there is Big Bend, and I think the Ozarks are relatively close (in the same sense that Big Bend is relatively close). Anybody in the area have any recommendations for a good late winter/early spring two or three night trip in the vicinity?

I posted a very negative comment here yesterday - dont know if it got modded or had an apsotrophe...

But your friend is nuts - he needs to fly out to see you. You have more places to backpack within 2 hours drive than the whole state of Texas and Oklahoma too. I lived there for 22 years and either had to camp in little flat patches of trees or drive 9 hours to Big Bend or 10 hours to the Rockies. Eagle Rock loop will be about 6 hours.

haha, I don`t think I`ve ever seen anything get modded on this site. As for the other part, I agree. He`s originally from California so he`s fully aware what he`s missing. He will be coming out here in the spring and we`re going to try and get a trip in while he`s out as well.

Big Bend is worth seeing, but try to avoid spring break. If you cant, the state park is less crowded than the national park.

Eagle Rock loop may have some high creeks before the leaves come out, but its a good time of year to see it. The Ouachita trail is a little closer.

The best "backpacking" I did near Ft. Worth was kayaking down the Brazos River. There are a handful of miserable little places I could tell you about if you cant do a long road trip.

this may be a dumb question, but is it possible to pack down to the river in Big Bend and camp on or near its bank?

Shouldnt be a problem. Gravel and sand bars are public property in Texas and you can camp anywhere from a canoe. I havent done a trip like that in Big Bend but its a great idea. Look for a specific recommendation at bigbendchat.com

Maybe a slight forum software glitch...

haha, well, it is helpful info, so having it in triplicate helps emphasize the point. Thanks. Sounds good to me
