Yeah Gremlin, that's what I tried to tell Euro. It's just a bunch of bowlsheet, nuthin'but!

Euro I never was able to do a "real" adventure in the Dolomites. We lived like, 5 miles from them. Numerous trips, but they were all to huts with the kids, the group bunking kind. In much of the NE part of Italy, hiking off-trail and pitching tents where ever is a no-no. Man I'm telling you, I be eyeing that trip of yours HEAVILY.

It's pretty much the same here, or probably almost everywhere in the Alps. Pitching tents is either forbiden or very discouraged. There is precious little true wilderness left in the Alps. Most areas may look wild, but are, in fact, cultural landscapes, a beautifull patchwork of green pastures and dark forests below glaciated peaks. The ecosystem in the high alpine region is very fragile. The footprint of a tent may be visible for month after.
If you want to get away from the crowds stay at huts a) that are difficult to reach (long strenous hike of several hours), or b) huts that offer only basic shelter (no showers or hot water).

LOL, fully a compliment my man! I was just saying that if I didn't have a wife and kiddies draggin' from my teets all the time, perhaps I could do something TOTALLY AWESOME like this trip.

I am preparing to get myself fit and in shape for the summer hiking season. I have signed up at a nice new fitness centre and have started with cardiovascular workouts (treadmill, elliptical machine, cycling) to strenghten my stamina for those long and steep ascents and thin alpine air. Additionally once a week I go to group training - tai chi class for calm, control and mental strength, pilates and power yoga to improve my range of motion and flexibility and once in a while ayurveda oil massage or sauna to relax :-)

In June I will do a four days “Rock and Ice” training course with the SAC (Schweizer Alpen Club).

Instead of doing my tax return I am sitting over my maps and guide books. There are still so many places here that I haven't hiked befor. Everywhere in are huts and I have so far stayed at no more than ten of them. There is still so much to discover, so much to hike and yet, most of the time I seem to end up at the same trails that I have hiked befor.
