Anyone consider llamas?
Anyone consider having your gear carried for you for greater comfort or longer stays, with extras like real food, plush bedding, etc.? Llamas may fit the bill. They can ride in minivans or larger, don't poop wherever, are very low environmental impact and are extremely intelligent and personable.

If interested, there is an opportunity to check them out at the annual PNW Backcountry Llama Rendezvous and drive-in at Cutsforth Park near Heppner, Oregon, June 25-27.

This location is along the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway. See http://www.rattlesnakeridgeranch.com/rendezvous10.htm for details.

In the early days of this site there were several llama trips in the Sierras.

You can't see it from this side, but Buddy carries a little casket around his neck and his emergency pack includes a set of fondue forks.

I've never done a pack animal trip, but I could see it being pretty beneficial. I don't know about the rest of you all, but I think I could do double the distance in a hike without all that crap on my back. I did run into some people in the Escalante who had rented pack goats from a company (Cutely called "Escape Goats") and they were big fans. Llamas would work too I suppose

yeah, free advertising for sure, though... but at least it's backpacking relevant, right?

Hey Gremlin. Since your buddy has goats, have you ever considered getting one and training it as a pack goat? Not sure how much a goat costs.

This thread reminds of one of HPM's co-workers. HPM made an image for something at work that incorporated a mountain goat. The co-worker looked at it and said "Oh no, no mountain goats. Those are no good for eating."

The co-worker is correct. No matter how long the goat meat(?) is boiled in the stew, it is still like eating hard rubber!

FYI Goats eat EVERTHING including your gear. so after you have hiked 20 miles and lear your goat is nice and full and you have no food nor gear, you can eat the little b@stard..win win...
